Premier League: Newcastle vs. Chelsea Preview
Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea are taking on Champions League rivals Newcastle United in a crucial match in the race for a top five finish in the Premier League this season.
This match is Chelsea’s penultimate away game of the 2024/25 Premier League season, with Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea set to make the trip up to the North East of England to take on a Newcastle United side led by their Head Coach Eddie Howe. This Premier League contest will see the Blues battle the Magpies for victory at St. James’ Park as they look to secure themselves not only a top five finish, but also a spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League for next season.
Chelsea will be taking on Newcastle United away from home in what is a crucial league match in the English top flight on Sunday 11th May in what is going to be a 12pm kick-off.
Following this game, the two games that remain in the Premier League for Maresca and Chelsea will see them face Ruben Amorim and his Manchester United side in the final home game at Stamford Bridge on Friday 16th May (20:15 KO), just before a trip to the City Ground to take on fellow UEFA Champions League contenders Nottingham Forest, led by Nuno Espirito Santo on Sunday 25th May in what is a 4pm kick-off in the Midlands.
Back to the game against Newcastle United, the Magpies are currently sitting just above Chelsea in fourth place with a total of 63 points from their 35 Premier League matches to date. The visiting Blues outfit has the same number of points from their 35 league matches, and is only in 5th place, below their hosts on goal difference alone.
With there being five spots available to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League, both clubs will feel that they have an excellent chance of securing themselves a place in the most prestigious European Competition of them all for next term. Victory is still important, though, as the Blues will be looking to not only keep their distance between themselves and the chasing pack, but also to further strengthen their chances of finishing in the top five in the Premier League this season.
If Chelsea do end up beating Newcastle United at St. James’s Park, then the Blues of West London will be able to climb as high as third in the Premier League, and if results go their way they could not only be in the top three, they could also find themselves just a point behind Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal in second place with just 2 games to go in the league.
Victory for Newcastle would also see them climb to second and be potentially be within a point of the Gunners whilst also building a three point gap between themselves and Chelsea.
When these two clubs met earlier on in the 2024/25 Premier League season at Stamford Bridge, it was to be a crucially important 2 – 1 victory for Chelsea against Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge back on Sunday, 27th October 2024. It was Chelsea who took the lead early on through their striker Nicolas Jackson with almost twenty minutes having elapsed (18’), before Alexander Isak equalised for Newcastle with just over half an hour of the game having gone (32’). Cole Palmer then won it for the Blues in West London thanks to a goal in the early stages of the second half (47’).
In their most recent game in the Premier League, Chelsea were emphatic and comfortable 3 – 1 winners at home against the recently crowned Premier League Champions Liverpool at Stamford Bridge. The goals for Chelsea on that momentous afternoon in the English Capital saw them score thanks to the efforts from the likes of Enzo Fernandez (3’) and Cole Palmer from the penalty spot (90+6’), whilst Chelsea’s other goal on that day came from an own goal from Liverpool central defender Jarrell Quansah early on in the second half (56’). Liverpool got their only goal of the game thanks to a header from their captain and talismanic Dutch central defender Virgil Van Dijk in the latter stages of this game to briefly halve the deficit (85’).
In their last game in the Premier League, Eddie Howe and his Newcastle United took on Brighton away from home at the Amex Stadium on the South Coast, where they drew 1 – 1 in a stalemate against the Seagulls on the afternoon of Sunday 4th May. Yankuba Minteh gave Brighton the lead in the first half with almost half an hour gone (28’) before the talismanic Swedish striker Alexander Isak found the back of the net to restore parity from the spot in the dying embers of this contest (89’).
Overall, Chelsea and Newcastle have met face to face competitively in all competitions on a grand total of no less than 178 times, with it being the Blues who have had the most victories in this particular fixture over the years with a total of 81 wins compared with 51 in total for the Magpies to date, as of the time of writing.
Excitement and anticipation are building ahead of the last few fixtures for Chelsea for the 2024/25 Premier League season, with this game against Newcastle United set to get underway at 12pm in the afternoon on Sunday, 11th May 2025.
