Amgen Irish Open Hospitality – Green On 18 Hospitality
The Amgen Irish Open, as it is now known for sponsorship reasons, is one of the standout tournaments on the European Tour calendar. A four-day extravaganza of world-class golf will be taking place from Thursday 10th September to Sunday 13th September 2026, and it will be taking place at the Trump International Golf Links & Hotel in Doonbeg, Ireland. Some of the best players in the world will be competing for one of the sport’s most prestigious prizes.
The most recent edition of this tournament took place back in September 2025 at The K Club, and it saw the home favourite Rory McIlroy emerge with a victory via a play-off, marginally beating his Swedish counterpart Joakim Lagergren, who was that year’s runner-up. This was the second time that McIlroy had won this competition, with his maiden triumph in the Irish Open having been back in 2016 – the runners-up that year were Wales’ Bradley Dredge and Scotland’s Russell Knox.
The aforementioned Rory McIlroy took part in the tournament in 2025 as the reigning Champion of The Masters following a tense and exciting play-off victory against Justin Rose at Augusta. In doing so, he became just the sixth golfer in history to have won all four major championships (The Grand Slam). The only other players to have achieved this feat to date includes the likes of Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods.
It is in 1927 that the story of the illustrious Amgen Irish Open starts. The inaugural tournament took place from 16th to 18th August that year at Portmarnock Golf Club, where 60 of the best players at that time competed over the course of 18 holes. It would be Scotland’s George Duncan who would come away as the very first winner, beating Englishman Henry Cotton by a margin of just one stroke in the end.
Then came a period of English dominance between 1928 and 1937. Ernest Whitcombe was the winner in 1928, and won again in 1935. His first win in this tournament was followed by Abe Mitchell (1929), Charles Whitcombe (1930), Bob Kenyon (1931 & 1933), Alf Padgham (1932), Syd Easterbrook (1934), Reg Whitcombe (1936) and Bert Gadd (1937).
It was Mark James who became the first golf player to win the Irish Open in consecutive years, winning at Portmarnock in 1979 and 1980. His first win saw him beat the United States’ Ed Sneed by one stroke, before emerging victorious against Scotland’s Brian Barnes by the same margin a year later.
Several other players have since achieved this feat, including Seve Ballesteros (1985, 1986), Ian Woosnam (1988, 1989) and Colin Montgomerie (1996, 1997).
As of the time of writing, there is only one player who has completed the astonishing feat of winning the Irish Open three years running – Nick Faldo. Faldo won his first title in this tournament in 1991, beating Colin Montgomerie by a margin of 3 strokes at Killarney. His second victory the following year was also at Killarney, where, this time, he was victorious ahead of runner-up Wayne Westner via a playoff.
Finally, Faldo’s third and last victory in the Irish Open came at Mount Juliet back in 1993. This win also came via a play-off, where he, this time, was able to beat Jose Maria Olazabal to the title.
Nick Faldo is one of four golf players to simultaneously hold the record of having the most wins of the Amgen Irish Open to date. The others are the aforementioned Colin Montgomerie (1996, 1997 & 2001), Seve Ballesteros (1983, 1985 & 1986) and Bernhard Langer (1984, 1987 & 1994).
There are a plethora of players just behind, all with 2 Irish Open wins to their name. They are as follows: Jon Rahm (2017 & 2019), Sam Torrance (1981 & 1995), Ian Woosnam (1988 & 1989), Mark James (1979 & 1980), Harry Bradshaw (1947 & 1949), Ernest Whitcombe (1928 & 1935), and finally Bob Kenyon (1931 & 1933).
