Last 5 Winners of Coral Gold Cup

Newbury is set to host the prestigious Coral Gold Cup on 28th November, and here we look at some of the past winners of the race.

The Coral Gold Cup is one of the most exciting races on the jump racing calendar each and every year. This includes 2026, when this race will take place once again at the historic Newbury Racecourse on Saturday 28th November 2026, with proceedings in the Gold Cup getting underway at 14:50.

History is synonymous with the Coral Gold Cup, with this race dating back all the way to the first ever running of this race back in 1957 which was won by Mandarin, trained by Fulke Walwyn and ridden by jockey Gerry Madden. Walwyn would go on to train Taxidermist to victory in this very race a year later in 1958 with John Lawrence the jockey on this occasion.

Walwyn would go on to win the Gold Cup a further 5 times as trainer, with: Mandarin (1961), Mill House (1963), Man of the West (1968), Charlie Potheen (1972) and Diamond Edge (1981). Fulke is currently the most successful trainer in the history of the Coral Gold Cup with 8 wins in this race over the course of his career.

As for the most successful jockey, this honour is shared by Willie Robinson and Tom Scudamore, who have 3 wins each. Robinson won it with: Mandarin (1961), Mill House (1963) and Man of the West (1968), whilst Scudamore has got his three wins with: Madison du Berlais (2008), Sizing Tennessee (2018) and Cloth Cap (2020).

As for Newbury Racecourse itself, it has even more history. It is widely agreed that the first recorded racing, known as the ‘Newbury Races’ taking place in 1805 on Enborne Heath. This was an annual two day race meeting that took place until 1811.

The grounds themselves did not become known as Newbury Racecourse for approximately 90 years, when, in 1904, the Newbury Racecourse Company formed and purchased the land. The first ever race meeting at Newbury Racecourse took place from 26th to 27th September 1905.

Fast forward to 2026, and Newbury Racecourse is one of the most historic and prestigious horse racing venues in the country.

Excitement ahead of the Coral Gold Cup’s return to Newbury Racecourse this Saturday is growing by the hour, and here we will take a look back at the last five winners of one of the most prestigious races on the calendar.

2021: Cloudy Glen

We now move on to 2021, and it was Cloudy Glen, ridden by Charlie Deutsch who took victory in this very race a couple of years ago. This race was tight as well, and Deutsch managed to cross the line ahead of Fiddlerontheroof and Brahma Bull, who had to settle for a second and third place finish respectively.

It did initially look as if it was going to be a relatively comfortable victory ahead of the run-in, with Cloudy Glen three lengths ahead. However, he did face intense pressure from his closest competitors, but did still emerge as the winner.

This was a first Coral Gold Cup win for jockey Charlie Deutsch, although this was trainer Venetia Williams’ second victory having previously tasted success in this very race with Teeton Mill back in 1998.

2022: Le Milos

The most recent running of this race took place a year ago in November 2022. The winner of the Coral Gold Cup on this occasion was Le Milos, who was ridden to victory by Harry Skelton after he managed to fend off competition from Remastered in second and Gericault Roque in third place.

It was at the second to last that Le Milos took control, with his victory confirmed after crossing the line with those behind him tiring and falling away in the dying embers of the race.

This was a first ever win in the Coral Gold Cup at Newbury for Harry Skelton and trainer Dan Skelton.

2023: Datsalrightgino

The 2023 Coral Gold Cup winner was Datsalrightgino, trained by Jamie Snowden and ridden by Gavin Sheehan. The 7-year-old won at odds of 16/1, beating Mahler Mission by nearly four lengths.

Behind Mahler Mission, came joint-favourite Monbeg Genius who came home in third ridden by Jonjo O’Neill Jr. Popular horse, owned by Harry Redknapp, Shakem Up’arry finished sixth, starting the race at odds of 33/1.

2024: Kandoo Kid

Kandoo Kid (8/1) won the 2024 Coral Gold Cup at Newbury, trained by Paul Nicholls and ridden by Harry Cobden. The 8-year-old horse held off Broadway Boy by 1¾ lengths, marking a fourth victory in this race for trainer Paul Nicholls.

Vicctorino managed to come home third in a field of 13 with General En Chef and Irish horse, Henry’s Friend in fourth and fifth.

2025: Panic Attack

Panic Attack, trained by Dan Skelton and ridden by Tristan Durrell, won the 2025 Coral Gold Cup Handicap Chase at Newbury. The 9-year-old mare won at 16/1 odds, finishing 6½ lengths ahead of Three Card Brag, completing a double after her Paddy Power Gold Cup success.

Strong favourite Myretown was the only horse to fall during the race and allowed Panic Attack to take the riches. Fortunately for everyone involved, both horse and Jockey came away unscathed.

Anticipation amongst horse racing fans for the 2026 Coral Gold Cup at Newbury Racecourse is continuing to grow ahead of the big day on Saturday, 28th November 2026.
