Last 5 Winners of Coral Gold Cup

Newbury is set to host the prestigious Coral Gold Cup on 2nd December, and here we look at some of the past winners of the race.

The Coral Gold Cup is one of the most prestigious races on the jump racing calendar each and every year. This includes 2023, when this race will take place once again at the historic Newbury Racecourse on Saturday 2nd December 2023, with proceedings in the Gold Cup getting underway at 14:50.

History is synonymous with the Coral Gold Cup, with this race dating back all the way to the first ever running of this race back in 1957 which was won by Mandarin, trained by Fulke Walwyn and ridden by jockey Gerry Madden. Walwyn would go on to train Taxidermist to victory in this very race a year later in 1958 with John Lawrence the jockey on this occasion.

Walwyn would go on to win the Gold Cup a further 5 times as trainer, with: Mandarin (1961), Mill House (1963), Man of the West (1968), Charlie Potheen (1972) and Diamond Edge (1981). Fulke is currently the most successful trainer in the history of the Coral Gold Cup with 8 wins in this race over the course of his career.

As for the most successful jockey, this honour is shared by Willie Robinson and Tom Scudamore, who have 3 wins each. Robinson won it with: Mandarin (1961), Mill House (1963) and Man of the West (1968), whilst Scudamore has got his three wins with: Madison du Berlais (2008), Sizing Tennessee (2018) and Cloth Cap (2020).

As for Newbury Racecourse itself, it has even more history associated with it. It is widely agreed that the first recorded racing, known as the ‘Newbury Races’ taking place in 1805 on Enborne Heath. This was an annual two day race meeting that took place until 1811.

The grounds themselves did not become known as Newbury Racecourse for approximately 90 years, when, in 1904, the Newbury Racecourse Company formed and purchased the land. The first ever race meeting at Newbury Racecourse took place from 26th to 27th September 1905.

Fast forward to 2023, and Newbury Racecourse is one of the most historic and prestigious horse racing venues in the country.

Excitement ahead of the Coral Gold Cup’s return to Newbury Racecourse this Saturday is growing by the hour, and here we will take a look back at the last five winners of one of the most prestigious races on the calendar.

2018: Sizing Tennessee

Firstly, we go back to the Gold Cup five years ago in 2018 at Newbury. This race was also won by Tom Scudamore, but this time he was riding Sizing Tennessee, trained by Colin Tizzard, to victory after managing to comfortably fend off Elegant Escape (ridden by Harry Cobden) and Dingo Dollar (ridden by Wayne Hutchinson). The latter two horses ended up finishing in second and third place respectively.

It was a relatively comfortable win after Scudamore managed to confirm victory after leading with four jumps to go.

This was a third win for Scudamore and a second victory for trainer Colin Tizzard, whose first win came a couple of years earlier in 2016 with Native River. Richard Johnson was the jockey who rode Native River to victory.

2019: De Rasher Counter

2019’s Gold Cup was as enthralling as this race is every year, and the winner of this prestigious race that year was De Rasher Counter, who was ridden by Ben Jones and trained by Emma Lavelle. Brendan Powell’s The Conditional and Harry Cobden’s Elegant Escape were Jones’ closest competition, ending up with a second and third place finish respectively.

De Rasher Counter led the field with four jumps to go, and Jockey Jones was able to see out the victory in the end after managing to retain his lead for the remainder of the race.

This was a first victory in this race for both Ben Jones and Trainer Emma Lavelle.

2020: Cloth Cap

The Gold Cup still managed to take place at Newbury Racecourse in 2020. Jockey Tom Scudamore won the race that year on board Cloth Cap, with Callum Bewley’s Aye Right and Brendan Powell’s The Conditional filling the remaining two spots in this race’s top three.

This victory was made more extraordinary when you consider that Cloth Cap had started at the back of the field before going on to win the race comfortably in the end after some tremendous riding from Scudamore.

Tom Scudamore is the joint most successful jockey in the history of the Coral Gold Cup, and his success with Cloth Cap is his third and most recent win in this race at Newbury.

2021: Cloudy Glen

We now move on to 2021, and it was Cloudy Glen, ridden by Charlie Deutsch who took victory in this very race a couple of years ago. This race was tight as well, and Deutsch managed to cross the line ahead of Fiddlerontheroof and Brahma Bull, who had to settle for a second and third place finish respectively.

It did initially look as if it was going to be a relatively comfortable victory ahead of the run-in, with Cloudy Glen three lengths ahead. However, he did face intense pressure from his closest competitors, but did still emerge as the winner.

This was a first Coral Gold Cup win for jockey Charlie Deutsch, although this was trainer Venetia Williams’ second victory having previously tasted success in this very race with Teeton Mill back in 1998.

2022: Le Milos

The most recent running of this race took place a year ago in November 2022. The winner of the Coral Gold Cup on this occasion was Le Milos, who was ridden to victory by Harry Skelton after he managed to fend off competition from Remastered in second and Gericault Roque in third place.

It was at the second to last that Le Milos took control, with his victory confirmed after crossing the line with those behind him tiring and falling away in the dying embers of the race.

This was a first ever win in the Coral Gold Cup at Newbury for Harry Skelton and trainer Dan Skelton.

Anticipation amongst horse racing fans for the 2023 Coral Gold Cup at Newbury Racecourse is continuing to grow ahead of the big day on Saturday, 2nd December 2023.
