Most recent winners of the Ebor Handicap
The Ebor Handicap is widely seen as the most iconic race of the York Ebor Festival each year, and here we will take a look at the last five winners.
The York Ebor Festival is highly prestigious, and it is one of the final major race meetings of the flat racing season. The action is set to return once more to the historic York Racecourse for four days of enthralling racing from Wednesday 19th August to Saturday 22nd August 2026.
An incredible atmosphere awaits the horses, trainers, and jockeys as they line up to compete for glory in all of the 28 races that are set to be run throughout this year’s edition of this famous festival.
There are a number of races that hold a significant amount of prestige, including the Juddmonte International (Day One), the Pertemps Network Yorkshire Oaks (Day Two), and the Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe Stakes (Day Three). Another is the Ebor Handicap, which is arguably the most prestigious of the lot.
It will probably come as little surprise that Lester Piggott, with the calibre of career that he had as a jockey, is the most successful jockey in the entire history of the Ebor Handicap as of the time of writing, with no less than 5 victories to his name. These wins came with Gladness (1958), Primera (1959), Die Hard (1961), Tintagel II (1970) and Jupiter Island (1983).
Here, we are going to take a look at the last five winners of the Ebor Handicap.
Sonnyboyliston (2021)
Sonnyboyliston came out on top as the winner of this race in the end, following what was an enthralling race. Silvestre De Sousa’s Alounak came in third place, whilst runner-up Quickthorn, ridden by Jason Hart, finished a length and a half behind the winner.
Trawlerman (2022)
Four years ago, it was Trawlerman who won the 2022 edition of the highly prestigious Ebor Handicap at York Racecourse. Jockey Frankie Dettori managed to fend off some stern competition from the likes of Patrick McDonald’s Alfred Boucher and William ‘Billy’ Lee’s Earl Of Tyrone, who had to settle for second and third place finishes in the end.
The margin of victory for Trawlerman stood at just a nose in one of the tightest and tensest Ebor Handicaps in recent memory.
Absurde (2023)
Absurde came home the winner in 2023, and extraordinarily, this was a second consecutive victory in this race for Jockey Frankie Dettori, whose fantastic performance meant that he and Absurde had a winning margin of seven and a half lengths ahead of runner-up Sweet William, ridden by Robert Havlin. Oisin Murphy, onboard Live Your Dream, came in third place.
2024: Magical Zoe
In the 2024 edition of the Ebor Handicap, Magical Zoe emerged victorious at York Racecourse. Ridden by Billy Lee for trainer Henry de Bromhead, Magical Zoe took the feature handicap over 1 mile 5 furlongs and 188 yards, holding off Kihavah, who finished second under P J McDonald, and Oneforthegutter in third. The victory added to the Irish raider’s growing profile on the flat.
2025: Ethical Diamond
The 2025 Ebor Handicap was won by Ethical Diamond, with a classy performance under jockey William Buick for trainer Willie Mullins. Ethical Diamond held a strong finish to win the prestigious handicap at York, fending off Ascending (ridden by Seamie Heffernan) in second and Queenstown (ridden by Ryan Moore) in third. This win continued Ethical Diamond’s strong season and added another prestigious success to Mullins’s record.
There is plenty of excitement and anticipation for the enthralling action to come across all four days at the historic York Racecourse for the 2026 York Ebor Festival, which is set to start on Wednesday, 19th August, before coming to a close on Saturday, 22nd August 2026.
