Arsenal vs Sporting CP Preview: Champions League Quarter-Final

Arsenal return to the Emirates Stadium for the second leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final against Sporting CP, with the winner facing Atletico Madrid in the semi-final.
The tie remains finely balanced following a hard-fought first leg in Lisbon, where Arsenal secured a narrow advantage thanks to a late winner from Kai Havertz in a tight and competitive 1-0 victory.
First-Leg Advantage Sets Up Decisive Night
Arsenal’s 1-0 win in Portugal gives them a slight edge heading into the return fixture, but Mikel Arteta has been clear that nothing is settled at this stage of the tie.
Speaking ahead of the second leg, Arteta stressed the importance of focus and intensity, highlighting the level required and the need to match Sporting’s threat across the pitch.
Sporting, meanwhile, produced several dangerous moments in the first leg and will travel to North London believing they can still turn the tie around.
Arsenal Looking to Bounce Back After Domestic Setbacks
The Gunners enter the fixture following a difficult spell domestically before the international break, with defeats to Southampton and AFC Bournemouth impacting their momentum in the Premier League title race. Their exit from the FA Cup added further disappointment to their recent run.
Despite that, Arsenal’s Champions League form has remained one of the more consistent aspects of their season. Arteta has repeatedly pointed to the team’s European performances as evidence of their progress, particularly in terms of game management and defensive organisation.
Sporting CP Pose an Attacking Threat
Sporting CP arrive in North London with a strong attacking record this season and several key players in excellent form.
Leading the line, Luis Suárez has been their primary goalscoring threat, registering 33 goals in all competitions so far this campaign. His movement and finishing have been central to Sporting moving on from their former and now Arsenal striker Viktor Gyökeres.
Supporting Suárez, Pedro Gonçalves has contributed 22 goal involvements this season, continuing his reputation as one of the most influential attacking midfielders in Portuguese football.
Former Wolverhampton Wanderers winger Francisco Trincão has also been a major creative outlet, producing 30 goal contributions across all competitions. His ability to operate between the lines and deliver in key moments adds another dimension to Sporting’s attacking threat.
Arsenal will need to remain disciplined defensively, particularly in transition, to limit the impact of Sporting’s forward players across the tie.
Team News and Availability
Arsenal head into the second leg with several key fitness concerns as Mikel Arteta continues to assess his squad in the final stages of preparation.
Declan Rice missed training on Tuesday, with Arteta expected to monitor his condition closely ahead of kick-off. Bukayo Saka has also been absent from recent sessions due to an Achilles issue and did not feature in the final training session, alongside Jurrien Timber, who is managing a groin problem.
Riccardo Calafiori was also unavailable for the first leg as he continues recovery from a knock, while captain Martin Ødegaard saw a knee issue flare up again, which ruled him out of the weekend defeat to Bournemouth.
There is also potential disciplinary risk for midfield options Martin Zubimendi and Christian Nørgaard, both of whom are one booking away from a one-match suspension.
Past Meetings
Sporting CP arrive at the Emirates Stadium, having avoided defeat on their last two visits. In 2018, they earned a 0-0 draw which helped secure progression to the knockout stages of the Europa League.
Five years later, the two sides met again in the same competition, with Sporting holding Arsenal to a 1-1 draw in the return leg after a 2-2 first-leg result in Lisbon.
On that occasion, Pedro Gonçalves scored for Sporting, while Granit Xhaka was on the scoresheet for Arsenal, before the Portuguese side advanced on penalties to reach the quarter-finals.
A Place in the Semi-Finals on the Line
With a narrow advantage from the first leg, Arsenal return home knowing the tie is still very much alive. Sporting CP remain firmly in contention, ensuring a competitive and finely poised second leg under the lights in North London.
The winner will progress to the semi-finals of the Champions League, with The Gunners hoping to host Atletico Madrid which promises to be an incredible semi-final if Arsenal progressed.
Arsenal also have three remaining home fixtures in the Premier League with Arteta’s men looking to win their first Premier League title since 2004. You can secure your seat with an Eventmasters VIP Hospitality Package here.
