Kristian Prenga: Anthony Joshua’s Next Opponent

Anthony Joshua is set to face Kristian Prenga in a warm-up bout ahead of a potential blockbuster clash with Tyson Fury, as he looks to sharpen up against a big, durable opponent before the biggest fights of his career.
Who is Krisitna Prenga?
Kristian Prenga is a relatively unknown figure outside of boxing circles, but that is set to change dramatically after being confirmed as the next opponent for former unified world champion Anthony Joshua.
The 35-year-old was born in Orosh, Albania and now fights out of Edgewater, New Jersey. He enters the biggest fight of his career with a professional record of 20 wins and just one defeat. Notably, every one of his victories has come by knockout, although his opposition has largely consisted of lower-level journeymen rather than established contenders.
At six-foot-five and over 260 pounds, Prenga is a naturally imposing heavyweight. He is around the same size as Joshua, which adds a physical dimension to the contest and makes him a useful stylistic opponent for a fighter rebuilding rhythm and sharpness.
What did Prenga have to say about the fight?
Despite being a heavy underdog, Prenga has shown no shortage of belief ahead of the bout. He said:
“Anthony Joshua is a great fighter, but he made a terrible miscalculation in picking me as his opponent. This is the kind of fight that changes everything in my life and his.
“I know they have big plans ahead after this fight. I know they are overlooking me. I’m happy about that. I will derail their plans and shock the world this July in Saudi Arabia.”
What has Prenga won?
Prenga is not currently ranked by any of the four major sanctioning bodies in the heavyweight division. His most notable achievement to date is a brief reign as North American Boxing Association champion, which he won via a third-round stoppage against Samuel Crossed.
While born in Albania, he is now based in the United States, making him eligible for regional titles in North America. According to BoxRec, he is ranked second among active Albanian heavyweights behind Nelson Hysa.
What is Prenga’s fighting style?
Prenga is a tall, awkward boxer-mover who uses his reach well and prefers to operate behind a steady jab. He has been selected in part because of the stylistic challenges he presents, particularly in replicating certain physical traits associated with fighters such as Tyson Fury.
He throws a variety of punches, including uppercuts from different angles, and is also a capable body puncher. His straight right hand and left hook to the body have accounted for most of his stoppage wins.
While his knockout record is impressive on paper, questions remain over the level of opposition he has faced, meaning the fight against Joshua represents a significant step up in class.
A career-defining opportunity
For Prenga, this is the defining moment of his career. From relative obscurity, he now steps into one of boxing’s biggest stages with a chance to shock the world.
For Joshua, it is expected to be a return bout designed to rebuild momentum and prepare for Tyson Fury.
