Manchester City vs Crystal Palace: Title Race on a Knife Edge as City Must Win

Manchester City return to the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night knowing there is no room for error as the Premier League title race edges towards its climax, with anything other than victory over Crystal Palace likely to end their hopes of catching leaders Arsenal.
Pep Guardiola’s side have reached a stage of the season where every point carries maximum consequence, and the stakes could not be clearer: win and the gap to Arsenal is cut to two points, stumble and the title may effectively be out of reach.
City back at the Etihad with momentum, but pressure builds
City responded well to their chaotic 3-3 draw at Everton by beating Brentford 3-0 at home on Saturday, a result that briefly restored belief after a wobble in form. Second-half goals from Jeremy Doku, Erling Haaland and Omar Marmoush underlined City’s attacking depth, even if Arsenal’s narrow win over West Ham United the following day ensured the gap stayed at five points.
That result, sealed amid VAR controversy, has left Guardiola’s side in a familiar but dangerous position. They know the margin for error is gone, especially with a demanding run-in that includes an FA Cup final and league fixtures against Bournemouth and Aston Villa.
The Etihad has been a fortress once again. City have not lost a top-flight home match since August and have scored two or more goals in 14 of their last 16 league games on home soil. They also boast an extraordinary Wednesday night record in Manchester, unbeaten in 36 Premier League fixtures on that day, winning 30 of them.
Against Palace specifically, City have dominated recent meetings, losing just one of their last nine encounters in all competitions, although that defeat did come in the 2025 FA Cup final at Wembley.
Palace arrive safe, settled and dangerous away
Crystal Palace arrive in Manchester with far less pressure on their shoulders after securing mathematical safety following their 2-2 draw with Everton at the weekend. Head coach Oliver Glasner praised his side’s resilience after they came from behind twice at Selhurst Park, with their season now shifting towards finishing as high as possible in the table.
Palace sit 15th, with a gap both above and below them, but there is still scope to climb into the top half if results go their way in the final three matches.
There is also a growing sense that they are not a side to be taken lightly on the road. They have taken more Premier League points away from home than at Selhurst Park this season and have scored at least twice in six of their last seven visits to the Etihad, a surprising trend that will give them confidence despite their inconsistent form.
However, recent away results do raise concerns, with six defeats in their last nine on the road, including back-to-back losses to Liverpool and Bournemouth, where they conceded six goals across those two matches.
Team news and selection calls
City’s squad remains in flux heading into a decisive week. Defender Abdukodir Khusanov is a doubt after missing the win over Brentford, while Nathan Aké is expected to continue in defence. Former Palace captain Marc Guéhi is also in contention to feature at centre-back.
There are also late fitness checks over Jérémy Doku and Rodri, with the latter still sidelined by a groin issue. If Rodri is not ready, Guardiola may turn to Tijjani Reijnders or Nico González to anchor midfield.
At the other end, Haaland remains the focal point. The Norwegian striker has 26 league goals and already boasts eight against Palace in just five Premier League appearances, making him a constant threat for Glasner’s back line.
Palace also have key absentees. Eddie Nketiah and Cheick Doucouré remain unavailable, while Borna Sosa and Evann Guessand are unlikely to be risked despite returning to training.
Ismaïla Sarr, who reached 20 goals in all competitions this season last time out, is expected to lead the attack alongside Jean-Philippe Mateta and Yeremy Pino in a fluid forward line. In midfield, Adam Wharton and Daichi Kamada are pushing to retain their places, while Daniel Muñoz and Tyrick Mitchell will provide width from wing-back roles in a 3-4-2-1 system.
What is at stake
For City, this is simple. Win and the title race stays alive heading into a dramatic final week. Drop points and Arsenal will just have to beat already relegated Burnley.
For Palace, the pressure is off but the opportunity remains. They have caused problems at the Etihad before and will look to exploit any tension in the home crowd as City chase perfection under pressure.
