Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium – the home of Scottish Rugby for the Six Nations 2025.
Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium (formerly known as BT Murrayfield) is the home to the Scotland rugby team and houses the offices of the Scottish Rugby Union.
A tremendous hospitality experience, Scottish Gas Murrayfield is located in the west end of Edinburgh, the Scottish capital, and near Murrayfield Ice Rink, Murrayfield Curling Rink, and Edinburgh Zoo.
Walkable from the city centre, people exit the bars and restaurants, merging into vast crowds heading for the rugby match.
The walk to Murrayfield is 10-15 minutes. At the start of the rugby match, the road is blocked, with thousands tramping towards the venue.
It is hard to beat banter, camaraderie, colour and laughter, with the reverse happening after the game, albeit losing supporters are in less good humour!
With a capacity of 67,130 rugby guests, Scottish Gas Murrayfield is used for most Scottish international matches, with all Scotland’s Six Nations home games being played there.
Scottish Gas Murrayfield also hosts Edinburgh Rugby, one of Scotland’s two professional sides in the Guinness Pro 14, featuring teams from Ireland, Wales, and Italy.
Although mainly a rugby union venue, it has hosted football matches, American football, rugby league, and music concerts in the past.
Tina Turner played at Scottish Gas Murrayfield in 1996 as part of her Wildest Dreams Tour. U2 have performed, and so have The Rolling Stones. A highlight came in July 2005 when Murrayfield featured the final Live 8 concert, Edinburgh 50,000 – The Final Push, with performances from James Brown, Texas and The Proclaimers. Oasis played a sold-out show in 2009, while other artists have included Bon Jovi, Madonna and One Direction.
Murrayfield Experience is the official provider of hospitality and events at Scottish Gas Murrayfield for the Six Nations.
It proclaims: “The only thing better than watching the action live at Scottish Gas Murrayfield is to watch it live in luxury! Entertain friends or clients with premium seats, superior hospitality and fine dining in luxurious surroundings with the promise of Scotland player interaction after the game. Experience the electric atmosphere of Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium live events, enjoy exclusive rugby hospitality and meet the national team after the game.”
In addition to sport, Murrayfield offers conferences, meetings, dinners, exhibitions, weddings, Christmas and Hogmanay.
The complex dates back to the 1920s and 19 acres of land purchased from the old Edinburgh Polo Club at Murray’s Field for £3,800. The money was raised through debentures; previous internationals played at Inverleith.
A stand and three embankments were constructed, which took two years. On March 21st, 1925, England – who else could it possibly have been given the rivalry between the two nations – were the first team to visit, with 70,000 people watching Scotland beat them to win their first Five Nations Championship Grand Slam.
Scottish Gas Murrayfield’s record attendance of 104,000 was set on March 1st 1975 when Scotland defeated Wales 12-10 during the 1975 Five Nations Championship. This attendance stood as a world record until 1999.
There are two tiers of seating on the four sides of Murrayfield. The West and East stand running the length of the pitch, and the South, and North stands behind the posts.
There is a 100m running track in front of the West stand, meaning those seated there are a little further from the action, but there are no bad seats in the house. The ticket office is located to the rear of the East Stand, and corporate facilities are available in all stands apart from the East. The Scottish Rugby Union makes a considerable effort to create a unique atmosphere at national games, with plenty of pre and post-match entertainment for Scotland rugby fans.
It is always a brilliant buzz visiting Scottish Gas Murrayfield – anyone attending the Six Nations in 2025 can enjoy a first-class experience with our VIP hospitality when watching Scotland international fixtures.
