Ireland have been dealt another significant injury blow ahead of the Nations Championship Southern Series, with captain Caelan Doris and centre Tommy O’Brien both ruled out after picking up knocks in Leinster’s URC final win on Friday.
Itoje has been rested after going beyond World Rugby’s recommended 30-game limit in each of the last two seasons. It also comes after a relentless run that included leading the British and Irish Lions to a series win over Australia last summer.
The inaugural Nations Championship will begin with a blockbuster six-Test Super Saturday on 4th July as rugby union’s new global competition brings together the leading nations from the northern and southern hemispheres.
The Nations Championship is set to become one of the most significant developments in international rugby since the sport turned professional in 1995.
