The Finals of this year’s Davis Cup will be underway, with Australia v Switzerland coming face to face at the AO Arena in Manchester. Both nations will be looking to strengthen their chances of returning from this year’s tournament with the trophy in hand.
Only the United States has won more than Australia’s 28 Davis Cup titles since the competition’s inception in 1900. Australia won this tournament in 1907, 1908, 1909, 1911, 1914, 1919, 1939, 1950, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1955, 1956, 1957, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1973, 1977, 1983, 1986, 1999 and their latest triumph in 2003. Australia’s maiden Davis Cup win came following a 3-2 win against Great Britain in Worple Road from 20th to 24th July 1907. As for their latest Davis Cup win in 2003, Australia beat Spain 3-1 at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne between 28th and 30th November 2003.
Switzerland will be looking to add a second Davis Cup title in 2023, with their only win coming in 2014. That year, they beat France 3 – 1 at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Lille between 21st and 23rd November 2014.
These two nations have met twice in the last 20 years. Their first was in 2003 when Australia were 3-2 winners in Melbourne. Fast forward to their most recent meeting in September 2011, with Switzerland winning 3-2 this time at the Royal Sydney Golf Club.
Lleyton Hewitt holds no less than 4 of Australia’s records at the Davis Cup, with the most total wins (59 – 21), most singles wins (42 – 14), most ties played (43), and most years played (19). Tom Woodbridge holds the record for the most doubles wins (25 – 7), and he, with Mark Woodforde, are the best Australian Davis Cup doubles team to date (14 – 2).
Heinz Gunthardt/Markus Gunthardt and Jakob Hlasek/Marc Rosset are the best Swiss doubles team in the Davis Cup at the time of writing (7-5). Heinz Gunthardt holds the Switzerland record for most ties played (30), and he is level with Roger Federer in most years played in the Davis Cup to date with 15 each.
