Great Britain and France are two of the most successful nations in the more than 120-year history of one of tennis’ most prestigious tournaments, the Davis Cup. These two nations will be coming face to face at the AO Arena in Manchester in this year’s competition, with both looking to add to their extensive collections of Davis Cup titles.
Great Britain has won (together with France) the joint third most Davis Cups with 10 to date: 1903, 1904, 1905, 1906, 1912, 1933, 1934, 1935, 1936 and their most recent win in 2015. Their 3 – 1 victory against Belgium in November saw Great Britain win their first Davis Cup in almost 80 years. Their maiden win in 1903 was against the United States at the Longwood Cricket Club, where Great Britain 4-1. Fast forward to their latest triumph in 2015 against Belgium, where they won 3-1 in Ghent.
France, just like Great Britain, has won the prestigious Davis Cup 10 times as of the time of writing. Their wins have come in 1927, 1928, 1929, 1930, 1931, 1932, 1991, 1996, 2001, with their latest triumph coming in 2017. Their maiden win in this competition in 1927 was against the United States, who they beat 3-2 at the Germantown Cricket Club in Philadelphia. Fast forward to 2017, when they were 3-2 winners once again, this time against Belgium at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Lille, France.
The most recent meeting between these two nations came in the 2021 Davis Cup, where France won 4-1. Before that, Great Britain defeated France 3-1 in 2015 on their way to their most recent Davis Cup triumph.
Bobby Wilson holds several Davis Cup records for Great Britain, holding the record for the most ties played (34) and the most doubles wins (25 – 8). Wilson also formed part of a pairing of the joint best doubles team with Mike Sangster, tied with Patrick Hughes and Fred Perry (11 – 3). Speaking of Fred Perry, he currently holds the British Davis Cup record for most total wins (45 – 7). It is Bunny Austin with the most singles wins (36 – 12) and Greg Rusedski with the record for most years played with 13.
As for France, Pierre Darmon holds the French Davis Cup record for most total wins (47 – 21) and most singles wins (44 – 17). Guy Forget & Henri Leconte are the nation’s best doubles team (11 – 0), while Jacques Brugnon has the most doubles wins (22 – 9). At the time of writing, it is Jean Borotra who holds the French record for most years played (17), whilst Francois Jauffret has played the most ties for France with a record of 35.
