Following an exciting weekend of racing in the Becher Chase at Aintree, everyone is talking about the illustrious upcoming Grand National. The World’s Most Famous horse racing meeting will take place between Thursday 4th April – Saturday 6th April in 2019. Approximately 600 million people are expected to watch the Grand National race on Saturday from all over the world. Each year the meeting is highly anticipated and is the pinnacle of the hunt racing season. Racing enthusiasts can’t wait to see some of the world’s greatest jockeys, trainers and runners all competing for the grand prize.
Becher Chase 2018
The Becher Chase once again returned to Aintree Racecourse on Saturday 8th April 2018 and was an impressive showcase of who the ones to watch this season are. Walk In The Mill stomped to victory four and a half lengths ahead of the starting 18 horse lineup. Ridden by jockey James Best and at odds of 10-1 the pair displayed a strong performance throughout the race, demonstrating a true test of stamina for Walk In The Mill.
The early front-runners however were Call It Magic and Missed Approach who both started strong. However, the course at Aintree presents a long stretch from the final fence to the finish line this enabled those from behind to close in on the competition. It was all to play for in the final moments, with many thinking it would be another win for Vieux Lion Rouge. But Walk In Mill came out on top when it mattered securing the highest paid win for trainer Robert Walford. Both Call It Magic and Missed Approach struggled to make the top three with a fourth and sixth place finish.
The finishing lineup for the race was:
- Walk In The Mill: Odds: 10-1, Trained by Robert Walford.
- Vieux Lion Rouge: Odds: 11-1, Trained by David Pipe
- Ultragold: Odds: 12-1, Trained By Colin Tizzard
- Call It Magic: Odds: 4-1, Trained by Ross O’Sullivan
- Federici: Odds: 33-1, Trained by Donald McCain
- Missed Approach: Odds: 12-1, Trained by Warren Greatrex
- Just A Par: Odds: 50-1, Trained by James Moffat
- Present Man: Odds: 11-1, Trained by Paul Nicholls
- Noble Endeavor: Odds: 14-1, Trained by A C Stewart
- Crosshue Boy: Odds: 12-1, Trained by Sean Thomas Doyle
- Blaklion: Odds: 9-2, Trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies
- Dare To Endeavour: Odds: 66-1, Trained by Patrick Griffin
Following the races on Saturday the connections to Walk In The Mill spoke of the team’s plans for the big race in April. A return to Aintree is most definitely on the cards. Robert Walford spoke of how delighted they were with the impressive ride both James Best and Walk In The Mill displayed and he said now there’s only one way to go.
With the National Hunt season well underway there is plenty to look forward to ahead of the Grand National and we are now starting to see those really targetting Aintree for next year which is exciting.
Grand National 2019 Targets
All the excitement from Saturday’s race day has many speculating targets for Grand National. The official weights lunch will take place in February 2019 and here we will discover what horses have made the top weights for 2019. In 2018 we saw Definitly Red top the weights with 11st and 101b and a rating of 165. But who is hoping to come out top in 2019?
Gary Moore is just one of many of the illustrious trainers with their dreams set on a Grand National win. He is hoping previous Ascot champion Traffic Fluide will make the 2019 line-up. The horses return this season has already been impressive and he is set to be in fighting form for a run at Aintree next year. Moore believes Traffic Fluide “is made for the Grand National” and is hoping to train his first horse there next year. The odds of Traffic Fluide being a Grand National horse are currently 50-1, will he make it to Aintree?
The great return of Grand National hero. In 2017 One For Arthur stole the hearts of the nation and became the second Scottish trained horse to ever win the Grand National. Finishing four and a half lengths ahead of the other horses. However, 20 months on and despite a serious leg injury One for Arthur returned to his victorious home, Aintree. The comeback was highly anticipated, however, the horse fell, unseating jockey Tom Scudamore at fence three. This was not the outcome many had hoped for or anticipated. However, trainer Lucinda Russell claimed the horse was now fine and was just “over-enthusiastic”. Despite this, the connections of the horse are still hopeful for a return to Aintree and expecting a second place finish. In the Ante Post betting the horse is currently at 25/1 in second place behind previous winner Tiger Roll at 20/1.
Despite the odds connections of the horse and jockey Davy Russell believe it is an impossible task for Tiger Roll to win again at Aintree in 2019. A consecutive win hasn’t been achieved since the legendary Red Rum in 1973 and 1974. An extraordinary horse is needed to achieve such a victory. The horse’s prestigious trainer Gordon Elliot spoke that Aintree will not be the main focus of their racing season. They have their hopes set on a victory at Cheltenham instead in the Cross Country Race. It is predicted that Tiger Roll will carry the highest weight in 2019 for the Grand National making it a harder run for him. Do you think Tiger Roll can defy all odds and achieve a consecutive win?
The excitement for the Grand National continues to build and build as we get closer to the meeting. There’s plenty to look forward to from this prestigious steeplechase. Will 2019 be the return of the champions, or will we see new victories?
