2024 Cheltenham November Meeting: Review

The latest iteration of the historic November Meeting at the iconic Cheltenham Racecourse was enthralling, and here we will be taking a look back at all of the action from the 2024 edition of this famous event.

The November Meeting is an eagerly anticipated event on an annual basis, and the 2024 iteration of this famous horse race meeting at Cheltenham Racecourse was no different. Not only did some of the most famous and revered horses, trainers, jockeys, and owners turn, so did crowds in their thousands across all three days, with racing taking place from Friday 15th November to Sunday 17th November 2024.

All the races were eagerly anticipated, but certain races always stand out amongst the rest, and they are the Shloer Steeplechase, the Paddy Power Gold Cup, and the Unibet Greatwood Hurdle Race.

Here, we are going to take a look back at the action from all three days of the November Meeting that took place throughout last weekend, starting with Countryside Day, which got action underway for 2024.

Countryside Day (Day One)

Once the gates opened at 10:30am, the racing finally got underway at 13:10 in the afternoon on Friday 15th November with the 2024 Lycetts Insurance Brokers Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle Race getting proceedings underway. The first winner of the day was pre-race favourite Double Powerful, ridden by Dylan Johnston.

Hyland, ridden by Nico de Boinville, was then declared the winner of the Mucking Brilliant Paddy Power Novices’ Chase ahead of the likes of runner-up Resplendent Grey and Springwell Bay in third place.

This came before the highlight of the day’s action – the 2024 Shloer Chase. This much anticipated race was won on this occasion by Jonbon, the pre-race favourite, who was ridden to glory by jockey Nico de Boinville, with Nicky Henderson the trainer.

Felix De Giles’ Sweet David won the 14:55 Glenfarclas Cross Country Handicap Chase, followed by a win for Sam Twiston-Davies’ Potters Charm in the 15:30 Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle.

This was followed by the sixth and final race of Countryside Day – the Valda Energy Novices’ Handicap Hurdle at 16:00 on the afternoon of Friday 15th November.

November Saturday (Day Two)

We now move on to the second and penultimate day of the 2024 November Meeting at Cheltenham – November Saturday. East India Dock, ridden by Sam Twiston-Davies was the winner of the opening race of day two, which was the latest running of the JCB Triumph Trial Juvenile Hurdle. Olly Murphy‘s Static was the runner-up, whilst Nigel Hawke’s Torrent came in third place overall.

The Steel Plate & Sections Ltd (Limited) Amateur Jockeys’ Handicap Chase was won by the pre-race favourite, Paul Mullins’ Transmission, whilst it was another pre-race favourite, this time Harry Skelton’s L’Eau du Sud who then came out on top in the 13:45 Paddy Power Arkle Challenge Trophy Trial Novices’ Chase. Charlie Longsdon’s Western Zephyr came in second place as the runner-up on this occasion, whilst Neil King and Lookaway came in third place.

Then came the Paddy Power Gold Cup, not only the highlight of day two but also one of the standout races of the entire November Meeting. Il Ridoto, ridden by Freddie Gingell, became the latest winner of this highly prestigious race after managing to fend off some stern competition from runner-up Ga Law and Lets Go Champ in third place.

Pre-race favourite Doyen Quest then won the 14:55 From The Horses Mouth Podcast Handicap Hurdle, whilst it was another pre-race favourite, Hamsiyann, ridden by Jockey Daniel King who would go on to come out on top in the 15:30 Paddy Power Intermediate Handicap Hurdle.

The Unibet Greatwood Handicap Hurdle, the highlight of day three, and one of the biggest and most prestigious races of the whole November Meeting every year at Cheltenham Racecourse, came next.

On this occasion, it was won in the end by Jockey Harry Cobden on Burdett Road, followed by Harry Skelton’s Be Aware in second place as the runner-up, with pre-race favourite Dysart Enos, ridden by Jonathan Burke, having to settle for a third place finish in the end.
