More about Cheltenham November Meeting

The Cheltenham November Meeting is an annual event and is among the most prestigious race meetings on the jump racing calendar. As it has been each year, the historic Cheltenham Racecourse will host all of the enthralling racing action that comes with the Cheltenham November Meeting each year. It can also be used as a guide ahead of the 2024 Cheltenham Festival.

In terms of history, the Cheltenham November Meeting has been taking place annually since its inception in 2000. It was, however, originally known as the Cheltenham Open, and it only became officially known as the Cheltenham November Meeting as recently as 2017.

The Gold Cup is one of this race meeting’s most prestigious and eye-catching races, and even though it was added to the Cheltenham November Meeting’s schedule in 2000, it has actually been running since 1960. In terms of prize money, the Gold Cup offers the most of any race across the three days of the Cheltenham November Meeting – £160,000.

Mackeson were the original sponsor of the Gold Cup, and they were until 1995. Since then, the title sponsors of the race have been Murphy’s, Thomas Pink, Paddy Power and Bet Victor. It is currently sponsored by Paddy Power, who returned as the title sponsor back in 2020.

The most successful jockey to have ever participated in the Gold Cup is Tony McCoy, who has four wins to his name, which came in 1998 (Cyfor Malta), 2000 (Lady Cricket), 2001 (Shooting Light) and 2006 (Exotic Dancer).

As for the most successor trainer, that honour goes to Martin Pipe, who has trained no less than 8 winners in the Gold Cup at the Cheltenham November Meeting, including Beau Ranger in 1987 and Our Vic in 2005.

The most recent winner of the Gold Cup in 2023 was Stage Star, ridden by jockey Harry Cobden.

The Triumph Hurdle Trial is another race that stands out in the Cheltenham November Meeting schedule. This race has been run since 1987, with the first-ever winner being Daffodil, ridden by jockey Ron Hyett. Burdett Road won the most recent running of this race in 2023, fending off competition from the likes of Bradan Feasa to win by an emphatic margin of six and a half lengths in the end.

Another race that draws the crowds at the Cheltenham November Meeting is the SSS Super Alloys Arkle Challenge Trophy Trial Novices’ Chase. The most recent winner (2023) was Homme Public, who managed to win by a margin of two lengths ahead of Petit Tonnerre and Mighty Tom in second and third place, respectively.

After being founded back in 1987, the Arkle Challenge Trophy Trial was upgraded to become a Grade 2 race a few years later in 1994. With the race seeing horses aged 4 years old and up participating, many of its winners are of high calibre, going on to achieve further success.

One such horse was Best Mate, who, after winning the Arkle Challenge Trophy Trial in 2000, won the Gold Cup no less than three times, winning it in 2002, 2003 and in 2004. Best Mate also secured wins in the King George VI Chase, the Leopardstown Christmas Chase and the Peterborough Chase.

Looking ahead to next year’s Cheltenham November Meeting in 2024, the three days of enthralling action are to see no less than 19 races take place at the iconic Cheltenham Racecourse. History will be made in one of jump racing’s most famous and prestigious race meetings on the calendar.

There is no better way to experience all of the action at the 2024 Cheltenham November Meeting at Cheltenham than with an Eventmasters VIP Hospitality Package. Book now to avoid disappointment.
