The match between Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal and Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City is set to be one of the most high profile and eye catching fixtures of the 2025/26 Premier League season. Victory for the Gunners would see them gain some momentum in their bid for the title, and it would also be a statement victory that would damage the Cityzens’ own hopes of becoming the Champions of England once more.
This game is set to be enthralling and highly competitive, with this game set to be crucially important for both of these clubs. The atmosphere for this game also promises to be electric with two of the biggest clubs in England and the world going head to head for all three points in the heart of North London.
Mikel Arteta is set to be in charge for another season, and in 2025/26 he and his side will be looking to go one better than last year and taste the glory of winning this season’s title ahead of the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool. The Spaniard has been in charge ever since his appointment back in October 2019, when he was named as the permanent successor to Unai Emery – joining following a short stint in charge as interim boss for former club favourite Freddie Ljungberg.
After his first few seasons, Arteta had made his side title challengers by the time the 2022/23 season came around. In this campaign, the former Gunners midfielder led his side to the first of three successive second place finishes, finishing on 84 points on this occasion, finishing 5 points behind City.
The race for the title was even closer in the season that followed that campaign in 2023/24, with Arsenal and Mikel Arteta finishing as runners-up once again, this time with a gap of no more than 2 points between them and the Cityzens. Arsenal got 89 points to City’s total of 91 overall.
Last season, Arsenal finished second for the third season in a row with the Gunners and City both missing out on the title to Arne Slot’s Liverpool. This season saw Arsenal get 74 points from their 38 games in the English top flight.
Pep Guardiola has been in charge of Manchester City for almost 10 years, having been appointed to replace Manuel Pellegrini all the way back on 1st February 2016. Since then he has won a vast number of silverware for the Cityzens, which includes 6 Premier League titles and 1 UEFA Champions League title.
Last season (2024/25), Guardiola and City finished down in third place as the reigning Premier League Champions, finishing with a points total of 71, three behind Arsenal, and with a lower goal difference as well.
On the last time that Arsenal and Manchester City met in a competitive fixture in all competitions came in a Premier League fixture between these two teams at the Emirates Stadium back on Sunday 2nd February 2025. It was an emphatic 5 – 1 victory for the Gunners in the heart of North London, where Martin Odegaard (2’), Thomas Partey (56’), Myles Lewis-Skelly (62’), Kai Havertz (76’), and Ethan Nwaneri (90+3’) all scored the goals for Arsenal on that day. For City, the only goal scorer for them on that day was Erling Haaland in the early stages of the second half (55’).
Overall, these two clubs have gone head to head competitively 213 times overall, and it is Arsenal who currently has the superior record of 101 victories compared with the 65 that the Cityzens have as of the time of writing. There have been a total of 47 draws between them so far.
