Following qualification, the United board appointed Michael Carrick as permanent head coach after a fruitful spell as interim boss.

Arsenal arrive this season as Premier League champions after ending a 22-year wait for the league title in a campaign that will be remembered as one of the most successful in the club’s modern history.
Mikel Arteta’s side finally got their hands on the trophy after several years of near misses, producing the consistency and quality required to finish at the summit of English football.
The title triumph marked Arsenal’s first league title since the famous Invincibles season of 2003/04 and represented the culmination of Arteta’s long-term rebuild at the Emirates Stadium.
The Gunners came agonisingly close to completing a historic double, reaching the UEFA Champions League final for just the second time in their history. After a thrilling European campaign, Arsenal were ultimately denied by holders Paris Saint-Germain, suffering heartbreak in a penalty shootout after Gabriel skied the Gunners’ final penalty.
There was further disappointment in the domestic cups, with Arsenal finishing runners-up in the Carabao Cup and falling at the quarter-final stage of the FA Cup. However, those setbacks did little to overshadow what was a remarkable season for the North London club.
After a third-place finish in the Premier League last season, Manchester United will want to replicate that and also reach the latter stages of the UEFA Champions League.
The Red Devils will also have their eyes on the domestic cups. New permanent Head Coach Michael Carrick will be keen to etch his name into Manchester United history by lifting the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
Former United midfielder Michael Carrick has now been confirmed to be permanent Head Coach after an impressive spell as interim boss.
Carrick, who made 316 appearances as a player for United, made an immediate impact on the playing squad by winning 12 of his first 17 matches in charge in the dugout.
Those results meant that the Red Devils finished on 71 points, 14 above the cut-off for the Champions League places.
He was part of the United squad that won the competition in Moscow in 2008, the last time the Manchester club lifted the trophy.
The current squad boasts some impressive talent. Assist king Bruno Fernandes surpassed the record of 20 set by Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry last season, setting up the likes of Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbuemo and Matheus Cunha.
Another new signing that impressed for United was goalkeeper Senne Lammens. The Belgian shot-stopper kept eight clean sheets in 32 appearances, making 79 saves throughout the campaign.
Overall, Arsenal and Manchester United have met in a competitive fixture 245 times, and it is the visitors who have a superior record of 103 wins compared with the record of 91. There has also been a total of 51 draws between these two teams.
