Unai Emery’s Aston Villa are set to host Nuno Espirito Santo and his Nottingham Forest side at the historic Villa Park in the heart of the city of Birmingham during the 2025/26 Premier League season. A win in this game for the hosts would see them gather more momentum in their hunt for UEFA Champions League football for next season.
With both clubs having been amongst those who were both successful in their respective bids for European Football last season, this game promises to be highly competitive and enthralling, with there also being a sensational atmosphere to boot in B6 for this high stakes contest.
November 2022 was when Unai Emery began his tenure in charge of Aston Villa after his appointment had been confirmed a month earlier. At the start of his time with the club, the Villans were in the midst of a relegation battle, but by the end of the 2022/23 season, the West Midlands outfit successfully qualified for the UEFA Conference League following what was a 7th place finish in the Premier League by the time that particular top flight campaign concluded.
Villa’s fortunes improved even further in the Spaniard’s first full season in charge in 2023/24. Starting with the Premier League that year, the Villans were excellent, and thanks to their superb form throughout that campaign, they were able to confirm a historic 4th place finish in the English top flight with a total of 68 points, which was enough for qualification for the following season’s UEFA Champions League, which would be the first time that the club would be competing in that competition since they did so as the reigning champions back in the 1982/83 season.
As for the UEFA Conference League, Aston Villa managed to reach the Semi Final stage where they were unfortunately knocked out by Greek Giants Olympiacos, who went on to emerge victorious in the Final against Italian Serie A giants Fiorentina, beating La Viola 1 – 0 at the Agia Sophia Stadium in Athens, Greece.
As for last season, Villa beat the likes of Bayern Munich (1 – 0), RB Leipzig (3 – 2), and Celtic (4 – 2) in the 2024/25 Champions League’s league phase before an emphatic 6 – 1 win on aggregate against Belgian Giants Club Brugge in the Round of 16 which booked their place in the Quarter Finals where they would face PSG. Luis Enrique’s side would go on to win the whole competition, and they were able to beat Villa 5 – 4 on aggregate over two legs, which did include a 3 – 2 victory for Villa at Villa Park in the second leg.
In the Premier League last season, Emery and Aston Villa finished in 6th place with 66 points, narrowly missing out on UEFA Champions League football on goal difference. Therefore, they successfully qualified for the 2025/26 UEFA Europa League.
Moving on to Nuno Espirito Santo’s Nottingham Forest, the Portuguese Head Coach has been in charge ever since he was appointed as the successor to Steve Cooper at the City Ground back on 20th December 2023, leading them to safety after avoiding relegation on the final day of the 2023/24 campaign thanks to what was a crucial 2 – 1 win away from home against Burnley at Turf Moor. Former Claret Chris Wood scored both of Forest’s goals that day (2’, 14’), whilst Josh Cullen was the only goal scorer for the hosts on that day (72’).
Last season, Forest was amongst the surprise packages, with them going from a relegation battle to being amongst the clubs fighting for UEFA Champions League Football. Forest, could not maintain this challenge, and they did go on to finish in 7th place with 65 points, which was enough for European Football anyway, with the club qualifying for the 2025/26 UEFA Conference League.
The last time that these two sides met in a competitive fixture was back on 5th April 2025 at Villa Park in what was to prove a crucial 2 – 1 victory for Aston Villa against Forest in B6 thanks to goals from the likes of Morgan Rogers (13’) and Donyell Malen (15’), whilst it was Jota Silva who was to be the sole goal scorer for Forest that day in the early stages of the second half (57’).
Overall, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest have met competitively in all competitions a grand total of no less than 134 times, and it is Villa who have the superior record of 63 victories compared with Forest’s total of 40 in total. There have been 31 draws between these two clubs to date, as of the time of writing.
