Two sides with hopes of European Football will meet at Stamford Bridge when Chelsea and Brighton come face to face in West London. New Blues Head Coach Mauricio Pochettino will want to secure a return to Champions League football by the end of the 2023/24 Premier League season after his appointment back in May 2023. After securing a top six finish last term, Roberto De Zerbi’s Seagulls will aim to finish even higher this season.
Over the course of last season, Chelsea scored 38 goals in 38 matches whilst also accumulating a total of 44 points. This meant a 12th place finish in the Premier League once the season had concluded. After this disappointing season, hopes are high that the Blues will have a much improved season in 2023/24 with a new manager.
Chelsea showed that they were a defensively proficient side last season, where they conceded just 47. This was the joint 4th best record in the division together with Liverpool. Kai Havertz was the Blues’ top goal scorer with 7 goals to his name.
Following Frank Lampard’s tenure as the Blues’ interim Head Coach, Mauricio Pochettino was announced as Graham Potter’s successor just weeks after the season concluded. The Argentine led Spurs to one 2nd place finish and two 3rd place finishes whilst also reaching a Champions League Final during his time in North London.
Most recently, Pochettino was at PSG, leading Les Parisiens to win the Coupe de France (2020/21), a Trophée des Champions (2020) and the Ligue 1 title in the 2021/22 season.
Roberto De Zerbi was appointed by Brighton as Graham Potter’s successor on 18th September 2022, after Potter left the club for Chelsea. The Italian Head Coach has built on the foundations left by his predecessor, and De Zerbi led his Seagulls side to a 6th place finish securing European football for the first time in Brighton’s history. Brighton finished with 62 points whilst scoring the 4th most goals in the league with a total of 72.
World Cup Winner Alexis Mac Allister was Brighton’s leading goal scorer in the 2022/23 Premier League season with 10 goals. Pascal Gross was close behind the Argentinian midfielder with the German scoring 9 goals in all.
Chelsea and Brighton first met in January 1933, and they have met on 20 occasions overall. Historically, it is Chelsea with the superior record of 12 wins in comparison to the Seagulls’ 3. There have been 5 draws in total.
The two clubs met most recently in April 2023, where the Seagulls emerged as 2-1 winners at Stamford Bridge. Conor Gallagher was Chelsea’s sole goal scorer of the match, scoring in the opening ten minutes (9’).
