Alonso takes over from Callum McFarlane following the Englishman’s short stint as interim boss. The Englishman oversaw Chelsea’s FA Cup Final against Manchester City, where he failed to get the Londoners over the line.

Since retiring from playing, Alonso has impressed hugely in the dugout. The Spaniard started his managerial career at Real Sociedad B, his boyhood club. In Alonso’s second season, the club won promotion to Spain’s second division following success in the play-offs. Following their first season in the second season, it was announced that Alonso would be leaving the club.

The former Bayern Munich player then took over at German rivals Bayer Leverkusen. In just his second season, he led the club to their first-ever Bundesliga title following a 5-0 win over Werder Bremen in April, 2024. He also guided Leverkusen to the UEFA Europa League final, where many expected his side to extend their 51-match unbeaten run, a modern-day record. However, to the shock of many, Alonso’s side were beaten 3-0 by Italian side Atalanta.

Following his huge success in Germany, Alonso, who made 158 appearances for Real Madrid, returned to the Spanish capital to manage the Madridistas.

Managing the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Junior, Alonso gained valuable experience that he’ll be able to bring to Stamford Bridge.

Despite winning the La Liga manager of the season in his first month in charge, Alonso struggled to make an impact at Madrid and was relieved of his duties in January 2026.

Chelsea finished the 2025/26 Premier League campaign in 10th place, just one point away from European qualification.

Alonso will be looking to take Chelsea to the summit of the table and qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

Hull City’s 2025/26 season will go down as one of those years supporters talk about for a long time. It ended with promotion back to the Premier League, achieved in the most dramatic way imaginable, as they beat Middlesbrough 1–0 in the play-off final at Wembley thanks to a 95th-minute winner from Oli McBurnie. After finishing 6th in the Championship, Hull became the first team in that position to win promotion since 2010, underlining just how hard-earned the achievement was.

A big part of the story is Sergej Jakirović, appointed in June 2025 after leaving Kayserispor. He arrived with his coaching team and quickly set about giving Hull more structure and belief. His first game, a 0–0 draw with Coventry City in August, summed up the early stages of his reign. Organised, competitive, but still building something.

As the season went on, Hull became tougher to break down and more consistent in big moments. They didn’t always play flashy football, but they found a way to stay in the fight, which ultimately carried them into the play-offs.

By the spring, Jakirović’s work was being recognised more widely, with a nomination for Championship Manager of the Year reflecting the job he had done in stabilising and pushing the team forward. The play-off semi-final win over Millwall set up the Wembley final, where Hull produced one of those unforgettable finishes that define a season.

Overall, these two clubs have gone head-to-head in competitive fixtures across all competitions on 49 occasions, and it is Chelsea who have the superior record of 35 victories compared with the Tigers’ 4. Hull have drawn with Chelsea on just 10 occasions to date.
