Meanwhile, Pochettino will want to return Chelsea to Champions League contention.
Kai Havertz led Chelsea’s scoring charts last season with 7 to his name, closely followed by Raheem Sterling and João Félix who scored 6 and 4 goals respectively. The Blues did show impressive resilience defensively last season, conceding just 47 times. This is the joint 4th best defensive record alongside Liverpool. By the end of the season, Chelsea had to settle for a 12th place finish in the Premier League, with a total of 44 points to their name.
Following the conclusion of the 2022/23 season, Mauricio Pochettino was announced as Graham Potter’s successor at Stamford Bridge in May 2023. Pochettino’s most recent job in management was with French heavyweights Paris Saint-Germain, with whom he won a number of trophies including the Ligue 1 title in the 2021/22 season.
Pochettino’s most recent spell in English football was of course with Spurs, who he led to the 2019 Champions League Final, as well as two 3rd place finishes and one 2nd place finish.
Sean Dyche was dismissed by Burnley following relegation in 2021/22, with former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany taking charge ahead of the 2022/23 Championship season. Kompany’s Clarets were the outstanding side last season, winning the league with 101 points, 10 ahead of runners-up Sheffield United.
Burnley won 29 of their 26 league matches whilst leading the way in goals with 87 scored in total. The Clarets also had the best defence in England’s second tier, conceding just 35 goals. It is the Blues with the superior record of 41 wins compared to Burnley’s 38. There have been 25 draws.
The two clubs met most recently in the Premier League on 5th March 2022 where Chelsea won in emphatic fashion, beating the Clarets 4-0 at Turf Moor. Reece James (47’), Kai Havertz (53’, 55’) and Christian Pulisic (69’) all found the back of the net for the Blues that day.
