Chelsea have turned to former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso to take over as manager as The Blues aim to enter a new era.
Alonso takes over from Callum McFarlane following the Englishman’s short stint as interim boss. The Englishman oversaw Chelsea’s FA Cup Final against Manchester City, where he failed to get the Londoners over the line.
Since retiring from playing, Alonso has impressed hugely in the dugout. The Spaniard started his managerial career at Real Sociedad B, his boyhood club. In Alonso’s second season, the club won promotion to Spain’s second division following success in the play-offs. Following their first season in the second season, it was announced that Alonso would be leaving the club.
The former Bayern Munich player then took over at German rivals Bayer Leverkusen. In just his second season, he led the club to their first-ever Bundesliga title following a 5-0 win over Werder Bremen in April, 2024. He also guided Leverkusen to the UEFA Europa League final, where many expected his side to carry on their 51-match unbeaten record, a modern-day record. However, to the shock of many, Alonso’s side were beaten 3-0 by Italian side Atalanta.
Following his huge success in Germany, Alonso, who made 158 appearances for Real Madrid, returned to the Spanish capital to manage the Madridistas.
Managing the likes of Kylian Mbappé, Jude Bellingham and VinÃcius Júnior, Alonso gained valuable experience that he’ll be able to bring to Stamford Bridge.
Despite winning the La Liga manager of the season in his first month in charge, Alonso struggled to make an impact in Madrid, and he was relieved of his duties in January, 2026.
Chelsea finished the 2025/26 Premier League campaign in 10th place, just one point away from European qualification.
Alonso will be looking to take Chelsea to the summit of the table and qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
Ipswich Town’s 2025/26 season was a strange one to live through, but it ended in exactly the right place.
After relegation from the Premier League, there was a clear sense of change at Portman Road. The squad looked different almost immediately, with only a small core remaining from the group that had achieved back to back promotions. Players like Liam Delap and Omari Hutchinson moved on, and it felt less like a continuation and more like starting again.
Kieran McKenna stayed in charge, and that continuity mattered. Coming into management after coaching roles at Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United, he had already delivered two promotions with Ipswich. This season, though, was about rebuilding rather than riding momentum.
The early weeks were uneven. Ipswich did not quite click, with a mix of draws, narrow defeats, and an EFL Cup exit to Bromley that summed up the frustration around the club at the time. There was no panic, but there was clearly work to do.
The turning point came with the 5 0 win over Sheffield United in September. It did not fix everything overnight, but it changed the feeling around the team. Confidence started to return and performances became more consistent.
The derby wins over Norwich City also stood out. Those games gave the fans something to latch onto and you could feel the mood shift around the club on those days.
From there, Ipswich slowly climbed into a stronger position. They became harder to beat, more controlled in games, and better at managing pressure.
On 2nd May, it all came together with a 3-0 win over Queens Park Rangers at Portman Road, sealing promotion back to the Premier League.
Overall, these two clubs have gone head-to-head in competitive fixtures across all competitions on 47 occasions, and it is Chelsea who have the superior record, with 26 victories compared with the Tractor Boys’ 10. Ipswich have drawn with Chelsea on just 11 occasions to date.
