Chelsea will welcome Wolverhampton Wanderers to Stamford Bridge in the 2023/24 Premier League season. A win would significantly help to reach the respective ambitions of both clubs – Chelsea will aim to return to the Champions League, whilst Wolves will look to climb the table and potentially achieve a top half finish.
In May 2023, Frank Lampard’s spell as Chelsea’s interim Head Coach came to an end and Mauricio Pochettino was appointed shortly after the season included with the Argentine becoming Graham Potter’s permanent successor after the former Brighton boss was dismissed back in April 2023.
Pochettino’s most recent job in management was with Paris Saint-Germain, where he won 3 trophies during his time in the French Capital: the Coupe de France (2020/21), the Trophée des Champions (2020) and the Ligue 1 title in the 2021/22 season. He had also found success at Spurs, coming within 90 minutes of winning the Champions League in 2019 as well as a 2nd place finish in the Premier League in the 2016/17 season.
The 2022/23 was a disappointing one for Chelsea in the league, finishing in 12th place with 44 points – therefore not qualifying for European Football. Their tally of 38 goals was disappointing, but the fact that they conceded just 47 goals in 38 games was very impressive. The Blues’ defensive record was the joint 4th best in the league, tied with Liverpool.
The Blues also made it to the latter stages of the Champions League, losing in the Quarter Final to 14 time European Cup winners Real Madrid on aggregate over two legs.
Kai Havertz led the way in Chelsea’ goal scoring charts last season with 7 – Raheem Sterling and João Félix were close behind with 6 and 4 goals respectively.
Julen Lopetegui took over at Wolves in November 2022, succeeding Bruno Lage who had been dismissed by the club a few months before in October 2022. The ex-Sevilla manager led the club to a 13th place finish with 41 points, very comfortably avoiding relegation to the Championship. There was a 7 point gap between Wolves and the bottom three once the 2022/23 season had concluded.
In the early stages of the 2023/24 Premier League season, Julen Lopetegui was replaced by Gary O’Neil as Wolves Head Coach. O’Neil’s previous job in management was with Bournemouth, who he joined initially as caretaker manager before taking over as Scott Parker’s permanent successor in November 2022.
Despite guiding the Cherries to a 15th place finish and 5 points clear of the drop, O’Neil left the club at the conclusion of the 2022/23 Premier League season.
Daniel Podence and Rúben Neves were Wolves’ joint top goal scorers with 6 goals each. Hwang Hee-Chan closely followed with 3 goals in all.
Chelsea and Wolves have met 115 times over the years at the time of writing. It is the Blues with the superior record of 44 wins as opposed to 41 for their West Midlands counterparts. There have been 30 draws in total.
The most recent match between these two sides came on 8th April 2023 where Wolves won 1-0 at Molineux thanks to a Matheus Nunes goal after half an hour had elapsed (31’).
