Chelsea and Fulham will renew their rivalry at Stamford Bridge when they play each other at Stamford Bridge in the 2023/24 Premier League season. The Blues will look to improve on last season and return to the Champions League, whilst Fulham will want to make further progress and will have sights set on the top half of the table after a mid-table finish last term.
In May 2023, just weeks after the 2022/23 campaign concluded, Chelsea announced the appointment of ex-Southampton, Spurs and Paris Saint Germain Manager Mauricio Pochettino. The Argentine became Graham Potter’s permanent successor at Stamford Bridge following the end of Frank Lampard’s time as the club’s interim Head Coach.
Pochettino will be best known in England for his spells in charge of Southampton and Spurs. After an impressive spell with the Saints, Tottenham appointed him as their new boss in 2014. Pochettino was dismissed in 2019, but in his time at the club he had come close to leading Spurs to their first ever Premier League title in 2016/17 and they also reached the Champions League Final in 2019. At PSG, he won numerous trophies, including the Coupe de France (2020/21), the Trophée des Champions (2020) and the Ligue 1 title (2020/21).
Despite finishing 12th with 44 points from their 38 league matches, Chelsea did make it to the Champions League Quarter Final last season where they were unfortunately defeated on aggregate over two legs by Real Madrid. In the league, the team scored a goal for each game that they played, finishing the campaign with a total of 38 goals.
Chelsea’s goal scoring charts was led by Kai Havertz last season, with the German international forward scoring 7 goals in all. Raheem Sterling and João Félix were close behind him with 6 and 4 goals respectively.
The Blues were resilient defensively last season conceding just 47 goals. This was the joint fourth best record in the division alongside 5th place Liverpool.
Marco Silva was appointed as Fulham’s latest Head Coach in July 2021 following Scott Parker’s departure for Bournemouth. Silva led his Cottagers side to an instant return to the Premier League, winning the Championship league title with 90 points. Fulham found the net 106 times that season, with only Manchester City bettering this record in the second tier in the 2001/02 campaign. The Cottagers had also scored 32 more goals than the next most prolific team, Bournemouth.
Last season, Fulham finished 10th in the Premier League, accumulating 52 points, a very comfortable 18 points clear of the bottom three. It may come as no surprise that it was Aleksandr Mitrovic who scored the most goals for the Cottagers last season with 14 to his name. Carlos Vinícius and Willian were joint second with 5 goals each.
Chelsea and Fulham have played each other on 89 occasions to date. They first met in a league match in December 1910, which the Cottagers won 1-0 at Craven Cottage. However, historically it is Chelsea with the superior record of 50 wins in comparison to Fulham’s 12. There have been 27 draws.
The most recent match between these two local rivals took place on the 3rd February 2023 at Stamford Bridge, where Chelsea and Fulham played out a 0-0 draw.
