The Blues of Liverpool and the Blues of West London will go head to head when Everton meets Chelsea at Goodison Park in the 2023/24 Premier League season. Sean Dyche’s Toffees will have ambitions of finishing further away from the bottom three and climbing the table, whilst Mauricio Pochettino’s side will be seeking to secure a return to Europe with a return to European football.
A disappointing start to the most recent season (2022/23) saw Everton find themselves as low as 19th with just 15 points, leading to the dismissal of Frank Lampard. Then, a short time later, Sean Dyche was announced as his replacement at Goodison Park in January 2023. It was not straightforward, but there was an improvement, and the Toffees showed resilience and spirit in abundance to avoid relegation to the Championship, which would have been the club’s first experience of the second tier since the 1953/54 season. They finished 17th in the Premier League.
Several significant results led to this successful survival bid, including a 1-0 home win against Arsenal and a 5-1 thrashing of Brighton away from home. The most important result of Everton’s season was undoubtedly the 1-0 win against Bournemouth on the final day that sealed their Premier League status. The crucial goal came from Abdoulaye Doucouré (57′).
Dwight McNeil’s 7 Premier League goals made him the Toffees’ most prolific player in the top flight last term, with Abdoulaye Doucouré and Demarai Gray scoring 5 and 4 goals, respectively.
Following Graham Potter’s dismissal by Chelsea in early April 2023 before Frank Lampard was named his replacement on an interim basis for the remainder of the season. The Blues ended the season in 12th place with 44 points and missing out on European football.
Then, in May 2023 and shortly after the season had concluded, former Southampton and Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino was announced as Potter’s permanent successor ahead of the 2023/24 Premier League season. The Argentine guided PSG to the Coupe de France (2020/21), a Trophée des Champions (2020) and the Ligue 1 title in the 2021/22 season. He also led the Lilywhites to two 3rd and one 2nd place finishes in the Premier League table.
Kai Havertz was Chelsea’s top scorer last term with seven goals, while Raheem Sterling and João Félix scored 6 and 4 goals, respectively.
Everton and Chelsea’s first ever competitive match came in a league match on 26th October 1907 at Stamford Bridge. Overall, the two clubs have met on 190 occasions, with the Blues having the most wins with 75 compared to the Toffees’ 59. There have been 56 draws between these clubs.
The most recent match to have taken place between these two teams was on 18th March 2023, when Everton showed a lot of spirit to salvage a 2-2 Premier League draw at Stamford Bridge. Abdoulaye Doucouré (69’) and Ellis Simms (89’) scored for Sean Dyche’s side that day.
