Goodison Park will be the setting of the 295th Merseyside Derby when Everton and Liverpool go head to head in the 2023/24 Premier League season. Toffees boss Sean Dyche will want to lead his team on a charge up the table and have as little involvement in the battle against relegation as possible. Meanwhile, Jürgen Klopp’s Reds will look to challenge for the title while securing a return to the Champions League.
These two clubs go way back. The original home of Everton Football Club was Anfield, with Earlestown their first opponents there on 27th September 1884 – this was eight years before Liverpool was founded. Back in the 1890/91 First Division season, Everton won 14 of their 22 matches to accumulate 29 points which was enough to win them their first-ever top-flight title. Following this title win, rent at Anfield was increased, and the Toffees eventually moved to the other side of Stanley Park and made Goodison Park their new permanent home. Liverpool was founded in 1892, and Anfield has been their home ever since.
Fast forward to January 2023, and Frank Lampard had been dismissed as Everton boss and replaced by ex-Burnley boss Sean Dyche. The Toffees were sat in 19th place with 15 points at the time of Dyche’s appointment, and the ex-Burnley boss managed to lift Everton to safety, with wins against Arsenal and Brighton, particularly notable.
The most notable result of all was the 1-0 victory against Bournemouth at Goodison on the final day of the 2022/23 Premier League season. Abdoulaye Doucouré secured the club’s Premier League status with an unstoppable and emphatic finish that gave the ‘keeper no chance (57’).
Dwight McNeil led the way in Everton’s Premier League goal-scoring charts with seven goals. Abdoulaye Doucouré and Demarai Gray scored 5 and 4 goals, respectively.
In October 2015, Brendan Rodgers was succeeded by ex-Borussia Dortmund boss Jürgen Klopp at Liverpool. The German has since established himself as a club legend after winning a plethora of trophies so far in his almost decade-long tenure: 1 Premier League title (2019/20), one Champions League title (2018/19), an FA Cup (2021/22), a UEFA Super Cup (2019) and an EFL Cup (2021/22).
It was 67 points and a 5th place finish in the Premier League for Liverpool last season, with just 4 points separating themselves and Newcastle United, who occupied the final Champions League qualification spot in 4th place.
With 19 goals, Mohamed Salah was Liverpool’s leading goal scorer in the Premier League last season, closely followed by fellow forward Roberto Firmino (11). Uruguayan forward Darwin Núñez got nine goals, while Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota got seven league goals each.
Everton and Liverpool have met on 193 occasions so far. The Reds have a superior record of 124 wins compared to the Toffee’s 83. There have been 86 draws between these two clubs.
Liverpool won the most recent Merseyside Derby 2-0 in the Premier League at Anfield on 13th February 2023.
