Everton, led by their Scottish Head Coach David Moyes, are set to take on Arne Slot’s Liverpool in what will be the latest chapter in the history of the legendary Merseyside Derby. It is a fixture that fans look out for every season, and this game is going to take place at the all-new and modern Hill Dickinson Stadium in the heart of Merseyside during the 2025/26 Premier League season. The game also promises to be enthralling and highly competitive.
The Toffees are targeting a midtable finish by the end of this season, whilst also keeping an eye on the possibility that they could even push for a finish in the top half of the table once all 38 of their games have been played this term. A victory against the Reds would not only take them a step closer to realising their ambitions for the season, but it would also give them local bragging rights against their biggest rivals.
This will be the first Merseyside Derby to be hosted at the 52,769-capacity Hill Dickinson Stadium in all competitions, and it is a ground that will create a simply tremendous atmosphere, especially for what is a fierce local rivalry. The last time that these two clubs met was, of course, at Everton’s former home ground, Goodison Park, which they left at the end of last season.
The current Head Coach of Everton Football Club is, of course, David Moyes, who has recently returned to the club for what is a second spell in charge. His appointment came 12 years after his original departure from the club in 2013, when he decided to accept the offer to take over from fellow Scot and legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.
Throughout his first tenure in charge of the Toffees, many iconic players for the club wore the blue of Everton, and this included but was not limited to the likes of Tim Cahill, Wayne Rooney, David Unsworth, Thomas Gravesen, Tim Howard, Yakubu, Steven Pienaar, Phil Jagielka, and Leighton Baines.
In the more than a decade he had away from the club, Moyes took charge of a variety of clubs in this country and abroad, and this included the likes of Manchester United, Real Sociedad, Sunderland, and West Ham United, who he took charge of twice this time. In 2023, he won the UEFA Conference League with the Hammers, getting his hands on some European silverware following his side’s 2 – 1 win over Italian Serie A side Fiorentina in the Final.
The goals on the day for West Ham United came from the likes of Said Benrahma (62’ – Penalty) and Jarrod Bowen (90’), with the central midfielder Giacomo Bonaventura, who scored for La Viola at the midway point of the second half, and just moments after Benrahma’s opener (67’).
It was confirmed that David Moyes had returned to the club to take charge as Everton Football Club’s brand new Head Coach back on Saturday 11th January 2025, which also saw him succeed Sean Dyche. In what were his first few months in charge, the Scotsman managed to take his club away from the relegation zone and up to what would be a very respectable 13th place finish in the end after they had earned a total of no less than 48 points from their 38 matches overall in England’s top flight.
In the end, there was a gap of as many as 23 points between them and the relegation once the Toffees’ season had come to a close.
Moving on to Liverpool, their Dutch Head Coach, Arne Slot, has been in charge since he officially took over from club legend Jürgen Klopp on June 1, 2024. The 2024/25 campaign was his first full season in charge, and he led the Reds to their second Premier League title, accumulating a total of 84 points from 38 games.
Overall, Everton and Liverpool have met competitively in all competitions on no less than 297 occasions, and it is the Reds who have the superior record of no less than 126 victories in this fixture to date, compared with the Toffees’ 84 wins against their Merseyside rivals so far. And, as of the time of writing, there have been a total of 87 draws between these two clubs.
