Regis Le Bris’ newly promoted Sunderland side are set to make the trip to West London to take on a Fulham side led by their Portuguese Head Coach Marco Silva at the iconic and historic Craven Cottage throughout the 2025/26 Premier League season. If the Cottagers do get all three points against the Black Cats, it would give their chances of qualifying for European football a boost going into the remainder of the season.
A return to the European stage is something that Fulham, as a club, would like to achieve very soon. After missing out last season, they will be looking to go one better and secure a spot within the top seven of the league table once the 38 games are complete. The last time the club played in Europe was during the 2011/12 season, when they participated in the UEFA Europa League.
To reach the Group Stages alone, the Londoners had to navigate through several qualifying rounds, facing teams from all corners of the continent. These wins in the qualifiers came against the likes of NSI Runavik (Faroe Islands, 3 – 0 agg.), Crusaders (Northern Ireland, 7 – 1 agg.), RNK Split (Croatia, 2 – 0 agg.), and finally Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk (Ukraine, 3 – 1 agg).
Then came the Group Stages, which is unfortunately where Fulham’s most recent European journey came to an end after a third place finish. They did manage to get wins against the likes of Denmark’s Odense 2 – 0, who they were able to beat away from home then going ahead and beating Poland’s Wisla Krakow at Craven Cottage in West London. They were convincingly beaten 4 – 1 on the night by the Cottagers. Fulham will look to have another opportunity in Europe for next season.
Marco Silva’s first ever full season in charge of Fulham was in the 2021/22 campaign where he led them to the EFL Championship title that season, with the Cottagers collecting a grand total of 90 points from their 46 matches over the course of their second tier league campaign. They were though just two clear of Bournemouth in second place. The Cottagers still scored the most goals of any club in the league that season with no less than 106.
They have been in the Premier League ever since and in the present day, Fulham’s most recent campaign under Marco Silva (2024/25) saw them in the race for Europe for much of the season, only to miss out in the end after an 11th place finish. They have 43 points to their name, losing out on the top seven by a margin of at least 11 points in total.
Moving on to Sunderland, they have been under the management of their French Head Coach, Regis Le Bris, since his appointment on 22nd June 2024, with him taking over officially on 1st July 2024, ahead of the 2024/25 EFL Championship season. He led them to what was a 4th place finish after having earned a grand total of no less than 76 points from their 46 matches.
Then after beating Coventry City 3 – 2 on aggregate in the play-off semi finals, a winning goal from Tommy Watson got them the 2 – 1 win at the iconic Wembley Stadium in the 2025 EFL Championship Play-Off Final to earn them a place in the Premier League 8 years after they had last competed in the top division in England (90+5’).
The last time that these two clubs met competitively in all competitions was in the FA Cup 4th Round Replay back on 8th February 2023 at the Stadium Of Light. Fulham won 3 – 2 thanks to some goals from the likes of Harry Wilson (8’), Andreas Pereira (59’), and Layvin Kurzawa (82’).
The last victory for Fulham against Sunderland in a league fixture was actually back in the EFL Championship on 27th April 2018 at Craven Cottage, where the Cottagers won 2 – 1 following goals from the likes of Lucas Piazon (45’) and Aleksandar Mitrovic (76’) either side of half time.
Overall, Fulham and Sunderland have gone head to head competitively in all competitions on a grand total of 66 occasions, and it is the Black Cats who have a superior record of 26 victories so far, whilst the Cottagers have 20 of them to their name as of the time of writing. There have also been a total of 20 draws between Fulham and Sunderland to date.
