The Merseyside Derby is a renowned fixture that is of global prominence. Arne Slot’s Liverpool and David Moyes’ Everton are set to go toe to toe at the historic and iconic Anfield for yet another chapter of this fierce and long-standing rivalry between these two clubs during the 2025/26 Premier League season. Not only is victory at stake, but local bragging rights are at stake, and this is another opportunity for Liverpool to take another step closer to the title and gather some fresh momentum for the next few games.
Over the last few years, Liverpool has been one of the most in-form and consistent teams in the world of football, and they will look to maintain this form during their latest campaign in all competitions. They also know that momentum is crucial for any title bid, and more can be gained with a victory in such a significant game as this against the Toffees.
The Reds are looking to emerge as the club with the most top-flight league titles in the history of English Football, with 21, currently jointly holding the record with another one of their fiercest rivals, Manchester United, which also has 20 at the moment.
The current Head Coach of Liverpool Football Club is, of course, Arne Slot, with the Dutchman having officially taken charge as the permanent successor to club legend Jurgen Klopp back on 1st June 2024. Slot took charge shortly after Klopp had departed the club following the conclusion of the 2023/24 season.
Last season, 2024/25, was the first full campaign with Arne Slot in charge, and it was a very successful one for the club as a whole. Their Dutch boss was able to lead them to the title after the former Feyenoord boss guided his team to a total of no less than 84 points, which was 10 points more than the team in second place, Arsenal. The Gunners were the runners-up for a third consecutive season.
During this title-winning campaign, a significant number of impressive results were achieved. Still, none proved as crucial as the game that saw them beat North London counterparts Tottenham 5–1 at Anfield late in the season, which sealed them a second Premier League title and their 20th overall. The goals for Liverpool on that historic day came from the likes of Luis Diaz (16’), Alexis Mac Allister (24’), Cody Gakpo (34’), and Mohamed Salah (63’). Not only that, there was also an own goal scored by Spurs defender Destiny Udogie (69’).
Moving on to Everton, their Scottish Head Coach David Moyes is enjoying a second spell in charge of the Toffees following his return to the club on 11th January 2025 to succeed previous boss Sean Dyche. In his half-season back in charge of this club, he managed to lead them away from any relegation worries to a respectable 13th place finish with a total of 48 points, which saw them end the campaign no less than 13 points clear of the relegation zone.
The last time that these two clubs met in a competitive game was a 1 – 0 win at Anfield in the Premier League back on 2nd April 2025. The winning goal in this game was scored by the Reds’ Portuguese forward Diogo Jota in the early stages of the second half to earn the local bragging rights for all Liverpool fans as well (57’).
Overall, Liverpool and Everton have gone head to head in a competitive game in all competitions on a total of no less than 297 occasions. It is the Reds who have the superior record of 126 victories in this legendary fixture compared with the Toffees’ current record of 84 wins as of the time of writing, whilst there have also been 87 draws between these two Merseyside clubs so far.
