Liverpool and Everton will face off once more in the latest renewal of the 2023/24 Premier League Merseyside Derby, which is one of the most intense games on the football calendar – it is also one of the oldest fixtures in English Football. Jürgen Klopp’s Reds will have their sights set on Champions League qualification and the title race whilst Everton, led by Sean Dyche, will want to avoid relegation considerably more comfortably this time.
These two rivals have a lot of history. Interestingly, it was Everton who were the original tenants at Anfield, playing their first game against Earlestown on 27th September 1884 (6 years before Liverpool were founded). Following their league title success in the 1890/91 season, rent increased and this eventually forced the Toffees out of Anfield on 25th January 1892. The club then moved to Goodison Park. Liverpool were founded just months later on 3rd June 1892, and they have been playing their home games at Anfield ever since.
Fast forward to October 2015 when Jürgen Klopp was announced as Brendan Rodger’s successor as Head Coach after leaving his post at Borussia Dortmund (2010/11 & 2011/12) where he won the Bundesliga twice and the DFB Pokal (2011/12) on one occasion.
The German has become a legendary figure at Anfield, and has won plenty of silverware during his almost 10 year tenure: 1 Premier League title (2019/20), 1 FA Cup (2021/22), 1 EFL Cup (2021/22), 1 Community Shield (2022), 1 UEFA Champions League title (2018/19), UEFA Super Cup (2019) and 1 FIFA Club World Cup (2019).
Liverpool ended the 2022/23 Premier League season in 5th place with 67 points, securing Europa League football and just 4 adrift of Newcastle United in the final Champions League place following an extraordinary run of form in the latter half of the season. Along the way, the Reds scored the third most goals with 75 – only Arsenal (88) and Manchester City (94) scored more.
They, alongside Chelsea, had the joint 4th best defensive record as a team with only 47 goals being conceded in 38 matches.
Liverpool’s leading goal scorer last season was Mohamed Salah, who found the net on 19 occasions across the Premier League season. Roberto Firmino came 2nd with 11, with the Brazilian followed by Darwin Núñez (9 Goals), Cody Gakpo (7 Goals) and Diogo Jota (7 Goals).
Sean Dyche was named as Everton’s new Head Coach on 30th January 2023, replacing Frank Lampard. The former Watford and Burnley boss managed to turn Everton’s fortunes around with the Toffees ended the season in 17th place with 36 points, avoiding relegation on the final day thanks to a 1-0 win against Bournemouth at Goodison Park. Dwight McNeil was the top scorer with 7 goals, whilst Abdoulaye Doucouré and Demarai Gray got 5 and 4 goals respectively.
Liverpool met Everton for the very first time in a league match on 13th October 1894. Overall, the Merseyside rivals have met on 293 occasions with Liverpool having the superior record of 124 wins in comparison to Everton’s 83. There have been 86 draws between them in this fixture as of the time of writing.
The most recent meeting between these two fierce rivals came on 13th February 2023 at Anfield where Liverpool emerged as comfortable 2-0 winners in the Premier League thanks to goals from Mohamed Salah (36’) and Cody Gakpo (49’).
