Manchester City are set to play against Luton Town in a Premier League match for the first time ever at the Etihad Stadium in the 2023/24 Premier League season. Pep Guardiola’s City side will want to make history by winning a fourth successive Premier League title whilst a Luton team led by Head Coach Rob Edwards will be hoping to avoid relegation and secure their place in the Premier League for next season.
Guardiola’s City team were in incredible form last term, winning the treble. Firstly, they beat cross-city rivals Manchester United 2-1 to win the FA Cup at Wembley Stadium. Then, the Cityzens were able to win their third successive Premier League title after not only winning 28 of their 38 matches, but also accumulating 89 points over the course of the season.
City and Newcastle were the best defensive teams in the league last year with only 33 goals conceded each. Guardiola’s side also managed to score an incredible 94 goals, the best in the entire division last term with runners-up Arsenal having the next best goal tally of 88. Erling Haaland scored 36 of City’s goals in the Premier League, whilst it was Phil Foden who was the player to get the second most goals for the club last season with 11 to his name overall.
Finally, Pep Guardiola led Manchester City to it’s first ever UEFA Champions League title in Istanbul after the Cityzens beat Italian heavyweights Inter Milan 1-0 courtesy of a great goal from Spanish midfielder Rodri midway through the second half (68’).
Guardiola already had a sky-high reputation when he succeeded Manuel Pellegrini at City in February 2016 after his plethora of successes at FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich. In his more than half-decade stint with City, Pep has led the club to a number of trophies: 5 Premier League titles (2017/18, 2018/19, 2020/21, 2021/22 & 2022/23), 2 FA Cups (2018/19 & 2022/23), 4 EFL Cups (2017/18, 2018/19, 2019/20 & 2020/21), 2 Community Shields (2018 & 2019) and 1 UEFA Champions League (2022/23).
After Nathan Jones departed for then-Premier League club Southampton on 10th November 2022, Rob Edwards, who had recently left Watford, was appointed as his successor at Luton Town later that same month. Edwards led the Hatters to a 3rd place finish in the Championship last season (2022/23) with 80 points to enter the promotion play-offs.
The club made it to the final at Wembley, where they were able to beat Coventry City 6-5 on penalties to secure a first ever Premier League season, and their first top flight season for more than 30 years.
Carlton Morris scored 20 Championship goals last term, making him Luton Town’s leading goal scorer last season. Only Coventry City’s Viktor Gyökeres (21) and Middlesbrough’s Chuba Akpom (28) were the only players to score more goals in England’s second tier. Elijah Adebayo was second in the Hatters’ goal scoring charts with 10.
Manchester City and Luton Town first met in a competitive match on 1st January 1898, with City beating Luton 3-0. Overall, it is the Cityzens with the superior record of 20 wins in comparison to Luton Town’s 14. There have been 15 draws in total in this fixture.
