Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City and David Moyes’ West Ham are set to play against each other once again at the Etihad Stadium in the 2023/24 Premier League season. City will be targeting what would be a historic 4th top-flight title in a row, whilst the Hammers will look to gather further momentum following their successes in Europe last season.
It was in February 2016 that Pep Guardiola was announced as Manchester City’s Head Coach ahead of the 2016/17 Premier League season. After failing to win the title in his first season, they did so in his second, and the Spaniard has not looked back since, winning a plethora of major honours to date: 5 Premier League titles (2017/18, 2018/19, 2020/21, 2021/22 & 2022/23), 2 FA Cups (2018/19 & 2022/23), 4 EFL Cups (2017/18, 2018/19, 2019/20 & 2020/21), 2 Community Shields (2018 & 2019) and 1 UEFA Champions League (2022/23).
The most recent major trophy that City won formed part of an incredible treble came in June 2023 when they won their maiden UEFA Champions League in Istanbul after beating Italian Giants Inter Milan 1-0 thanks to a fabulous finish from Spanish midfielder Rodri (68’). This is arguably the biggest achievement of Guardiola’s tenure at the club.
Manchester City were worthy Premier League Champions last term, only losing 3 of their last 20 Premier League matches. They also accumulated 89 points whilst also scoring a league-high of 94 goals which was 5 more than Arsenal, who had the next-best goal tally of 88. The Cityzens were also defensively sound – conceding the joint lowest amount of goals – 33, joint with Newcastle.
Erling Haaland was Manchester City and the Premier League’s leading goal scorer last season with 36 – Phil Foden came 2nd in the City scoring charts with 11, whilst it was Spurs striker Harry Kane who came second in the league’s scoring charts with 30.
On 29th December 2019, David Moyes returned for his second spell in charge of West Ham United, where he succeeded Manuel Pellegrini at the Hammers. It was a 16th-place finish in his first season (2019/20) before an incredible 6th-place finish the following year (2020/21), when they got to the semi-final, losing on aggregate to Germany’s Eintracht Frankfurt.
The 2021/22 season saw them finish 7th, securing their qualification for the Europa Conference League. The 2022/23 season saw West Ham have a poor league season, finishing in 14th place with 40 points – however, the season ended up being a historic one for the Hammers when they won the Europa Conference League, beating Italy’s Fiorentina 2-1 in the final in Prague. This was their first European triumph since winning the European Cup Winners Cup in 1965.
Saïd Benrahma and Jarrod Bowen were the joint top goal scorers for the Hammers last season, both scoring 6 goals each. Michail Antonio got 5 goals, whilst Declan Rice and Lucas Paquetá got on the scoresheet 4 times each in the league.
Manchester City and West Ham United met for the very first time competitively on 26th April 1924, which saw City win the league match 2-1 away at Upton Park. The two clubs have played against each other 119 times, with the Cityzens winning 62 of these matches in comparison to the Hammers’ 38. There have been just 19 draws between the two clubs.
The most recent occasion in which these two teams played each other was on 3rd May 2023 at the Etihad Stadium, where Manchester City won 3-0 with Nathan Aké (49’), Erling Haaland (70’) and Phil Foden (85’) scoring all of the goals for the home team.
