Wolves will take the trip up north to the Etihad Stadium, where they will play against Premier League and European Champions Manchester City in the 2023/24 season. The match will see City strengthen their ambitions of winning yet another league title whilst Wolves will look to climb the table after a disappointing campaign last season.
Manchester City completed the treble last season. They beat Manchester United in the FA Cup Final before winning the 2022/23 Premier League title. The treble was secured when the Cityzens won the UEFA Champions League in Prague after beating Italian Giants Inter Milan 1-0 in the final thanks to a goal from midfielder Rodri in the second half (68’).
Pep Guardiola’s City side were dominant in the Premier League last season, and they ended up winning the title by a margin of 5 points over Arsenal after a prolonged, tense and competitive battle between the two clubs for top spot. City got 94 goals as a team, which was 5 more than the Gunners who had the next best goal tally of 88.
In conceding only 33 goals, the Cityzens ensured that they had the joint-best defensive record in the Premier League last season alongside high-flying Newcastle United.
Pep Guardiola is no stranger to success, having won many a trophy at the likes of FC Barcelona and German giants Bayern Munich. The Spanish Head Coach was unveiled as Manuel Pellegrini’s permanent successor at the Etihad Stadium in February 2016. Pep won his first Premier League title in his second season in charge, and trophies have been a regular occurrence for Guardiola and Manchester City ever since, they have won: 5 Premier League titles (2017/18, 2018/19, 2020/21, 2021/22 & 2022/23), 2 FA Cups (2018/19 & 2022/23), 4 EFL Cups (2017/18, 2018/19, 2019/20 & 2020/21), 2 Community Shields (2018 & 2019) and 1 UEFA Champions League (2022/23).
As for Wolves, former Sevilla Head Coach Julen Lopetegui was appointed by the club in November 2022. Lopetegui succeeded Bruno Lage, who had been dismissed by the club in October of that year. The Spaniard guided Wolves to a 13th place finish with 41 points – 7 clear of the drop. They will be looking to build on this in the 2023/24 Premier League season under new Head Coach Gary O’Neil, who replaced the Spaniard at the start of this season.
Before joining Wolves, O’Neil had been the Head Coach of Bournemouth. He initially took over as the Cherries’ interim Head Coach before becoming Scott Parker’s permanent successor in November 2022. Despite a 15th place finish and a 5 point gap between themselves and the bottom three at the end of the 2022/23 season, O’Neil left the club.
Daniel Podence and Rúben Neves were Wolves’ joint top goal scorers last season with 6 goals each. Hwang Hee-Chan came second with 3 goals, whilst summer signing Matheus Cunha and Adama Traoré got 2 goals each.
Manchester City v Wolves played against each other for the first time on 30th September 1899 in a 1-1 draw in the league. The two clubs have played against one another 128 times with City having the most wins with 54 compared to Wolves’ 49. There have been just 25 draws in this fixture to date.
