Manchester United, who are led by Head Coach Michael Carrick, are set to welcome Unai Emery’s Aston Villa side at the iconic and historic Old Trafford, which is located in the heart of the City of Manchester. This game takes place during the 2025/26 Premier League season.
If the Red Devils do indeed go on to seal what would be a crucial victory against their West Midlands counterparts, then they would be taking an important step closer to realising their ambitions for the current campaign, which is to successfully seal a return to European Football via a top seven finish in the table. This would also add some further fresh momentum going into their next few games in all competitions.
Current Head Coach Michael Carrick, who spent 12 years of his playing career at United between 2006 and 2018, was appointed on a deal until the conclusion of the current 2025/26 campaign. He replaced former boss Ruben Amorim with the Portuguese predecessor departing back on Monday 5th January 2026.
Carrick has been at United during his coaching career, having been appointed as caretaker manager of the Red Devils following the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer back in 2021, before departing following the appointment of Ralf Rangnick as the interim Head Coach until the end of the 2021/22 season.
Then, on 24th October 2022, he was appointed as Middlesbrough boss as the first team Head Coach with Boro in relegation trouble early on in that campaign in the Championship. Then, following a run of 16 wins from 23 games, he went on to lead them to a 4th place finish with 75 points, which was enough for the play-offs which they lost over two legs to Coventry City in the semi-finals.
Then came an 8th place finish in the 2023/24 season before departing following a campaign that saw them end up with what was a 10th place finish in the 2024/25 season.
Moving on to Aston Villa, their Spanish Head Coach Unai Emery has been in charge ever since he took over from Steven Gerrard in the Villa Park hot seat back on Tuesday 1st November 2022, shortly after confirmation of his appointment had come just a few days earlier on Monday 24th October that year.
He led them to UEFA Champions League qualification with a 4th place finish in the 2023/24 season, reaching the Quarter Finals of the competition last season, where they were knocked out by the eventual winners Paris Saint Germain over the two legs. Last season, they successfully qualified for the 2025/26 UEFA Europa League, thanks to a 6th place finish with 66 points. However, they missed out on Champions League Qualification for the second successive season, this time to Newcastle United, on goal difference alone.
The last time that United secured a competitive victory in all competitions against the Villa was on the final day of the 2024/25 Premier League season, on Sunday, 25th May 2025, at Old Trafford. It saw United end the season on a high, thanks to what was a superb and well-deserved 2 – 0 triumph, thanks to goals from the likes of Amad Diallo (76’) and Christian Eriksen (87’), with the latter scoring from the penalty spot very late on in this game.
Overall, Manchester United and Aston Villa have met competitively in all competitions on no less than 201 occasions, and it is United who have so far got 107 victories in this fixture, compared with 52 wins for Villa against the Red Devils. There have also been as many as 42 draws to date, as of the time of writing.
