Manchester United and Burnley will go head to head at Old Trafford in the 2023/24 Premier League season. Erik Ten Hag’s Red Devils will be looking to continue to progress further by not only qualifying for the Champions League but also being involved in this season’s title race. The Clarets, led by their Head Coach Vincent Kompany, will be looking to secure their spot in the top flight for a second successive season after being promoted back to the Premier League after just one season away.
After finishing in 6th place with 58 points in the 2021/22 Premier League season, Manchester United looked to make progress in the following campaign (2022/23). This is something that they most definitely achieved, finishing the season 3 places higher and 17 points better off. They finished in 3rd place with 75 points – securing a return to Champions League football.
England international and academy graduate Marcus Rashford finished top of Manchester United’s goal-scoring charts last season with 17, followed by Portugal’s Bruno Fernandes who was able to find the back of the net on 8 occasions. Anthony Marital and Jadon Sancho got 6 goals each. The Red Devils, together with Arsenal, had the second-best defensive record after conceding just 43 times – only Champions Manchester City and Newcastle United conceded last times with teams scoring against both clubs just 33 times in 38 matches.
Before being appointed as Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s permanent successor at Old Trafford, Erik Ten Hag had been in charge of the likes of Go Ahead Eagles and Utrecht before taking charge of Dutch Giants Ajax. During his tenure in Amsterdam, Ten Hag led the club to 6 trophies: 3 Eredivisie titles (2018/19, 2020/21 & 2021/22), 2 KNVB Cups (2018/19 & 2020/21) and he Johan Cruyff Shield in 2019.
They also made the 2019 Champions League semi final after beating the likes of Real Madrid (4-1) and Juventus (2-1). They lost on away goals to Spurs after the two legged semi final tie had ended level at 3-3.
Once Erik Ten Hag had been announced as Manchester United’s latest Head Coach in April 2022, he set about improving the club’s fortunes. The Dutch Head Coach did just that, finishing in 3rd and also making the FA Cup Final. Ten Hag did win some silverware, beating Newcastle United 2-0 at Wembley to win the Carabao Cup Final on 26th February 2023.
Following the dismissal of Sean Dyche, former Anderlecht, Hamburg, Manchester City and Belgium central defender Vincent Kompany took charge as Head Coach ahead of the 2022/23 Championship season. The Clarets were the outstanding team in the second tier, winning the league title, accumulating 101 points, 10 ahead of Sheffield United in 2nd place.
Kompany’s Burnley team were the top scoring team in the entire league with 87 goals whilst they also had the best defensive record in the division, having conceded just 35 goals in their 46 matches.
Southampton forward Nathan Tella, on loan with the Clarets last season, was Burnley’s leading goal scorer with 17 goals whilst it was Manuel Benson who came 2nd in the club’s goal scoring charts with 12 to his name.
Manchester United and Burnley first met competitively in a league match on 10th September 1892, where they drew 1-1. Overall, the two clubs have met on 135 occasions with United having the most wins with 66 in comparison to the Clarets’ 45 victories in this fixture. There have been 24 draws at the time of writing.
The most recent match to have taken place between these two teams took place on 21st December 2022 in a Carabao Cup clash at Old Trafford where Manchester United were 2-0 winners. Denmark’s Christian Eriksen (27’) and Marcus Rashford (57’) got the goals.

The increase will see the range of season ticket prices change from £532-£950 last season to £559 to £998 for the 2023/24 Premier League fixtures.
