The iconic and world-renowned Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, located in the heart of North London, will host Spurs against a newly promoted Sunderland side led by their French Head Coach, Regis Le Bris, during the 2025/26 Premier League season. Should Tottenham emerge victorious against the Black Cats, they will take a step closer to realising their ambition this season, which is to qualify for European Football once again.
There will be much intrigue going into this game, as these two sides have not met in the English top flight for almost a decade, having last met in the league back in 2017. Victory will give Spurs some fresh momentum going into the remainder of their campaign as they look to have a positive campaign.
The atmosphere for this game promises to be electric in the English Capital, with both sets of supporters making a lot of noise while watching a game that’ll bring plenty of enthralling action as both sides look to secure a set of three very crucial points.
The biggest highlight of last season for Tottenham was the 2025 UEFA Europa League Final against a fellow Premier League outfit, Manchester United, at the San Mames Stadium in Bilbao, Spain. That game ended in a 1 – 0 victory for Spurs, with Brennan Johnson scoring the winning goal late on in the first half (42’) for a side then led by former Head Coach Ange Postecoglou. He then left the club with immediate effect shortly after the final had concluded.
It was the League Phase where Tottenham began their journey in last season’s competition, during which they secured enough wins to secure a spot in the top eight, finishing 4th with a total of 17 points – this automatically qualified them for the Round of 16.
Ahead of the knockout stages, Tottenham had indeed secured victories against the likes of Hungary’s Ferencváros (2–1), the Netherlands’ AZ Alkmaar (1–0), and German club Hoffenheim of the Bundesliga, whom Tottenham Hotspur were able to beat 3–2 away from home.
Then came the Round of 16, when Spurs met Dutch club AZ Alkmaar once again, this time over two legs. In the end, the Lilywhites were able to beat their Eredivisie counterparts 3–2 on aggregate, securing safe passage into the Quarter-Finals and taking one step closer to winning the trophy.
Spurs had already faced a German club in last season’s competition, and they met face-to-face with another Bundesliga outfit in the Quarter Final when they were drawn to play against Eintracht Frankfurt over two legs with Tottenham looking to get the best of Die Adler (The Eagles) to get into the final four.
The first leg of the Quarter Finals against Frankfurt was played in the heart of North London at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. It was a 1 – 1 draw by the end of the game in the English Capital, following goals from Pedro Porro (26’) and Hugo Ekitike (6’) for their respective clubs that night.
In the second leg, a successful penalty kick from English forward Dominic Solanke just before half time led to a 1 – 0 away win at the Deutsche Bank Park to secure what was a tight, tense, and crucial 2 – 1 victory on aggregate as they officially booked their place in the next round.
The Semi Finals of the 2024/25 UEFA Europa League then came next, with Norwegian club Bodø/Glimt being the opponents. The first leg of this tie also took place at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and goals from the likes of Brennan Johnson (1’), James Maddison (34’), and Dominic Solanke (61’ – Penalty) in what was a well deserved 3 – 1 victory in the end.
In the second leg at the Aspmyra Stadion in Norway, the home of Bodø/Glimt, it was to be another comfortable win for Tottenham, with them winning comfortably 2 – 0 thanks to goals from the likes of Dominic Solanke (63’) and Pedro Porro (69’). It was an emphatic and historic 5 – 1 victory on aggregate against their Norwegian counterparts overall.
Then came the victory against Manchester United in the final in Bilbao, where the 1 – 0 victory for the Lilywhites secured a place in the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League for Tottenham Hotspur. Former Spurs Head Coach Ange Postecoglou then promptly left the club shortly after the conclusion of last season.
Moving on to Sunderland, their French Head Coach, Regis Le Bris, has been in charge since he took over the North East Club on 22nd June 2024, ahead of the start of last season. He succeeded Michael Beale as Black Cats boss following a caretaker spell under Mike Dodds.
He led them to promotion back to the Premier League last season. Sunderland finished in 4th place with 76 points after 46 matches, securing themselves a place in that campaign’s promotion play-offs.
In the play-offs, they were able to defeat Coventry City 3 – 2 on aggregate before going on to seal the 2 – 1 win against Sheffield United at the iconic Wembley Stadium in the 2025 EFL Championship Play-Off Final. Tommy Watson scored the winning goal in dramatic fashion late on in the second half thanks to a super finish into the bottom right corner (90+5’). Promotion to the Premier League had been successfully secured.
The last time Spurs faced Sunderland at home was on 18th September 2016, at White Hart Lane in the Premier League. It was to be a 1 – 0 victory for the home side thanks to a winning goal from Harry Kane (59’).
Overall, Tottenham Hotspur and Sunderland have gone head to head competitively in all competitions on a total of 119 occasions, and it is Spurs who have the superior record of 50 victories at the moment as of the time of writing, whilst the Black Cats currently have 38 wins to their name in this fixture over the years. There have been 31 draws between these two teams.
