Clubs with the fewest league goals conceded so far

We have looked at the teams who’ve scored the most goals, but now we will go through the clubs with the best defensive records in the 2023/24 Premier League season.

Football in the Premier League is enthralling throughout each and every top-flight season. We have already taken a look at the clubs who have scored the most goals this term, but now we are going to shine a light on the defenders. We are going to take a look at the five teams who have conceded the fewest goals in the league so far.

It is common knowledge that goals are vital in football, but so are clean sheets. The fates of clubs can often be decided on goal difference, so a sturdy defence is essential should a team be aiming for the title, the top four, the top half, or to avoid a dreaded relegation down to the Championship.

We do have five entries on this list, but there are some clubs who have not made this list that find themselves in the top ten for most clean sheets since 1992. These clubs are Chelsea (476), Everton (361), Tottenham Hotspur (344), Aston Villa (315) and West Ham United (269).

Now, we will go through the clubs who have conceded the least amount of goals so far in the 2023/24 Premier League season, starting with Erik Ten Hag’s Manchester United.

5: Manchester United (16 Goals)

Manchester United are the club to have conceded the fifth least amount of goals in the top flight so far, with just 16 in the opening 13 matches. The Red Devils have also kept no less than 5 clean sheets this term, which puts them joint second together with Crystal Palace and Newcastle United.

Speaking of clean sheets, United has kept the most clean sheets in the history of the Premier League, with 500 so far. This significant milestone was sealed with their 3 – 0 win at Goodison Park against Everton last weekend.

4: Newcastle United (14 Goals)

Next up on this list is Newcastle United, who have conceded the next least amount of goals this season with just 14. Eddie Howe’s Magpies have kept the fourth most clean sheets in the 2023/24 season with 5, the same as the aforementioned Manchester United and Crystal Palace.

Since the formation of the Premier League more than 30 years ago, Newcastle United have kept the ninth most clean sheets with 286.

3: Manchester City (13 Goals)

Now we move on to the podium positions, and in third place, we have reigning Premier League Champions Manchester City. The Cityzens have conceded just 13 goals so far, one for every game that they have played in the top flight in the 2023/24 campaign. Pep Guardiola’s side have kept the joint third most clean sheets this season with 4, together with Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool.

Throughout the Premier League’s existence, Manchester City have kept no less than 351 clean sheets. This is 7 more than the next best total from Spurs (7th) and 36 more than Aston Villa (8th).

2: Liverpool (11 Goals)

Just missing out on top spot is Liverpool, who have conceded a grand total of just 11 goals in their 13 matches so far in the 2023/24 Premier League season. The Reds have kept the joint third most clean sheets in the league this season, together with title rivals City and Tottenham Hotspur, with 4 each.

Since the formation of the Premier League all the way back in 1992, Liverpool have kept the third most clean sheets with 460. Only Chelsea (476) and Manchester United (500).

1: Arsenal (10 Goals)

The team that has conceded the least amount of goals so far in the 2023/24 Premier League season is Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal, who have conceded just 10 goals this season. The Gunners are looking to go one step further this time than last term, and conceding as few goals as possible will help them achieve their end goal.

It won’t come as a surprise then, that Arsenal have kept the most clean sheets this season with 6. Since 1992, the North London club have kept the 4th most clean sheets with 456 – behind Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United, but they have kept 112 more than rivals Spurs.

There are some honourable mentions. Here are the clubs who did not quite make it onto this list: Tottenham Hotspur (17), Aston Villa (18), Brentford (18) and Chelsea (20).

It remains to be seen whether all of these teams can keep up their fantastic defensive records for the remainder of the season, but a strong defence is one of the keys to success. So, if these clubs can keep their records up for a sustained period, they will each have more of a chance of achieving their goals for the 2023/24 Premier League season.
