Samu Omorodion to Chelsea?

The 20 year old Spanish striker has been linked with a move to Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea this summer.

Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea have been busy so far in the 2024 Summer Transfer Window, and this activity looks set to only continue over the next few weeks with the 2024/25 season about to get underway.

As of the time of writing, the following players have decided to make the move to West London: Tosin Adarabioyo (Fulham, Free Transfer), Marc Guiu (FC Barcelona, £5 million), Caleb Wiley (Atlanta United, £8.5 million), Renato Veiga (FC Basel, £12 million), Omari Kellyman (Aston Villa, £19 million), Filip Jorgensen (Villarreal, £20.7 million) and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (Leicester City, £30 million).

The latest player to be linked with a move to Stamford Bridge is Atletico Madrid’s 20 year old Spanish striker Samu Omorodion. According to a report from the MailOnline, the fee to take the Spaniard to Chelsea is set to be £30 million in total.

Omorodion spent the duration of the 2023/24 season on loan with another La Liga club in the form of Deportivo Alaves. He made 34 appearances for Los Blanquiazules (The Blue and Whites), scoring a total of 8 goals whilst also providing an assist to boot. It was a promising campaign for the young forward, whose efforts helped Alaves to a very respectable 10thplace finish with a grand total of 46 points to their name.

His career began in the Sevilla youth academy before he then joined Nervion in 2015. After spending 6 years there, Omorodion signed for Granada in 2021, before becoming more involved in the club’s first team in 2022.

A debut for the Granada reserves as a substitute in a league fixture against Marchamalo, in a 2 – 1 defeat at home on 6th March 2022. Then, on 25th September, his first senior goal came as an equaliser to make it 1 – 1 in a league fixture with El Ejido. In total, he scored 18 goals in 33 appearances for the reserve side in the 2022/23 campaign.

At the start of the 2023/24 season, Samu Omorodion had the honour of making his first team debut, playing in a La Liga match for Granada in a 3 – 1 away defeat against Atletico Madrid. He did score in the game that made it 1 – 1 at the time (62’).

Omorodion also has international honours, having represented Spain at Under 19 and Under 21 level, with 2 goals in 7 Caps for the latter. The Spaniard has also been part of Spain’s 2024 Paris Olympics squad, scoring in a 2 – 1 defeat against Italy.

At the age of just 20, the signing of Samu Omorodion continues the trend that has seen Chelsea not sign anyone (so far) over the age of 26. The title of the youngest player to have been signed by the Blues so far this summer is jointly held by Omari Kellyman and Marc Guiu, who are both 18 years of age. On the other end of the spectrum, Tosin Adarabioyo, at the age of 26, is the oldest player to have signed for Enzo Maresca’s side to date.
