Jan Paul van Hecke

Transfer News: Jan Paul van Hecke to Spurs?

The Dutch central defender has been linked with a summer move to Thomas Frank’s Tottenham side from fellow Premier League club Brighton.

Tottenham Hotspur have been active this summer ahead of new Head Coach Thomas Frank’s first full season in charge of the North London Club.

The Lilywhites are looking to further strengthen their squad as they look to qualify for European Football again in the 2025/26 season through a top seven finish, though they will be specifically targeting Champions League qualification for the second season running.

So far, the club has completed deals for the likes of Mohammed Kudus (From West Ham United), Mathys Tel (From Bayern Munich), Kevin Danso (From RC Lens), Luka Vuskovic (From Hadjuk Split), and finally Kota Takai (From Kawasaki Frontale).

Spurs also seem like they are set to sign Portuguese midfielder Joao Palhinha on loan from Bayern Munich with an option to buy, with that deal potentially being officially confirmed soon.

The latest player to have been linked with a summer move for Brighton’s Dutch defender Jan Paul van Hecke, with the fee required for the North London Club to acquire the services of the 25 year old central defender is reportedly set at €50 million (£43 million) according to the Dutch news outlet Voetbal International.

Last season, van Hecke made a total of as many as 39 appearances in all competitions for the Seagulls, with 34 of these appearances coming in the league campaign. He also scored 1 goal and got 1 assist for the South Coast Club in the Premier League last term, with his efforts, including his defensive work, helping his side secure what was an 8th place finish with 61 points to their name after their 38 games had been played.

They only missed out on some sort of European Football, missing out on the top seven by a margin of 4 points overall, in the end.

Going back to the start of his career, Jan Paul van Hecke began his career as a player in his native Netherlands with VV Goes, before joining NAC Breda aged 18 in 2018, and he was only part of the club’s youth set-up for one season, before becoming part of the team’s senior squad in 2019, ahead of the 2019/20 Keuken Kampioen Divisie (Dutch Second Tier) season.

Throughout that campaign, the central defender made 25 appearances in all competitions, with 11 of these coming through the league itself, where he was also able to score 3 goals whilst also providing 1 assist as well to boot. His efforts helped NAC Breda finish 5th with 50 points, though the season did finish early as a result of the global pandemic.

The positive performances form Jan Paul van Hecke throughout that campaign caught the attention of Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion, with the Dutchman joining the Seagulls for a rumoured transfer fee of up to just £2.7 million – the deal was completed back on Thursday 10th September 2020, with him signing what was an initial three year contract with the South Coast Club.

He spent the 2020/21 season out on loan back in the Netherlands in the Dutch top division, the Eredivisie. During that league campaign, he was able to make as many as 28 appearances, scoring 1 goal whilst also getting 1 assist as well to boot, with his efforts helping the club to what was a 12th place finish with 39 points to their name after all 34 games had been played.

Then came a loan spell in the EFL Championship with Blackburn Rovers for the duration of the following season, 2021/22. He helped Rovers finish as high as 8th place with a total of 69 points, missing out on the second tier promotion play-offs by a margin of 6 points in the end. He has been part of the Brighton First Team regularly ever since.

After the 2022/23 season, in which he only made 8 appearances, he played most of their Premier League matches in the 2023/24 campaign, when he made 28 appearances to help them finish in 11th place after they were able to accumulate a total of 48 points from their 38 games.

Then came the aforementioned 2024/25 season, where he was able to finish in 8th place with a grand total of 61 points from their matches.

Jan Paul van Hecke is a good defender who would add further quality to the Spurs backline for next season and beyond. If this deal does get completed, then it would be a good signing for Thomas Frank’s Tottenham Hotspur team.

All eyes will be on Thomas Frank’s first full season in charge of the North London Club.

Excitement and anticipation are both building rapidly ahead of the start of the 2025/26 Premier League season, which is about to get underway.
