Spurs, led by former Celtic Head Coach Ange Postecoglu, will play David Moyes’ West Ham United once again at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the 2023/24 Premier League season. Tottenham will hold ambitions of returning to the European stage, whilst West Ham will look to improve their league position from last season whilst also building on the momentum from last season’s Europa Conference League win against Fiorentina.
Australian Head Coach Postecoglu was announced by Spurs as Antonio Conte’s permanent successor in June 2023 after Christian Stellini and Ryan Mason had stints as interim Head Coach in the final weeks of the 2022/23 season.
Over the course of his 2 season tenure at Celtic, Postecoglu won no less than 5 trophies in all: 2 Scottish Premiership titles (2021/22 & 2022/23), 1 Scottish Cup (2022/23) and 2 Scottish League Cups (2021/22 & 2022/23). The Hoops were dominant last season, scoring 114 goals (21 more than Rangers’ 93), conceding just 34 goals and winning all but 6 of their 38 Scottish Premiership matches last term. Postecoglu will hope that he can carry this success into his tenure at Tottenham.
Following the final day of the Premier League season, Spurs had to settle for an 8th-place finish in the league, accumulating 60 points in their 38 matches. Even after beating Leeds United away from home in their final match of the campaign, the Lilywhites very narrowly missed out on European football – they finished just 1 point behind Aston Villa in 7th place.
Tottenham most certainly had no trouble finding the back of the net last season, scoring the fifth most goals of any team in the division with 70. Harry Kane scored 30 of these, which made him the club’s leading goal scorer last season, with Heung-Min Son in 2nd place on the Lilywhites’ scoring charts with 10 to his name. The only clubs to have scored more goals than Spurs in the whole of last season were: Brighton (72), Liverpool (75), Arsenal (88) and Manchester City (94).
After winning a Champions League group containing Eintracht Frankfurt, Sporting and Marseille, Spurs went on to reach the Round of 16, where they were narrowly beaten 1-0 on aggregate over two legs.
David Moyes succeeded Manuel Pellegrini as West Ham United boss on 29th December 2019, beating Bournemouth 4-0 in his first game back at the club. The Hammers finished in 16th place that season before finishing 6th in the 2020/21 season with a record points total for the club of 65, securing Europa League football. Moyes’ side made it to the Europa League semi-final, losing to Eintracht Frankfurt whilst qualifying for the Europa Conference League with a 7th-place finish in the Premier League (2021/22).
Last season (2022/23), West Ham did have a disappointing Premier League campaign, finishing in 14th place with 40 points – 6 clear of the relegation zone. It did, however end up being a historic season for West Ham, winning the Europa Conference League after beating Italian side Fiorentina 2-1 in the final. This was their first European trophy win since they won the European Cup Winners Cup in 1965.
Saïd Benrahma and Jarrod Bowen were joint top goal scorers for West Ham United last season, scoring 6 goals each. Michail Antonio came 2nd in the club’s scoring charts with 5, whilst Declan Rice and Lucas Paquetá were just behind Antonio with 4 goals each.
Spurs and West Ham first met on 3rd September 1908 in what was a 3-0 league win for the Lilywhites. Overall, they have played each other on 221 occasions over the years and it is Spurs with the superior record of 101 wins in comparison to the Hammers’ 66. There have been 54 draws in this fixture at the time of writing.
The most recent match that took place between these two London clubs came on 19th February 2023, where Tottenham won 2-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Emerson Royal (56’) and Heung-Min Son (72’) found the back of the net for Spurs that day in what was a comfortable victory for the home side.
