2023 Formula One: Max Verstappen wins British Grand Prix
Max Verstappen finishes ahead of Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton to win the 2023 British Grand Prix, the Dutchman’s sixth victory in a row.
The 2023 Formula One season has been entertaining, with battles happening up and down the field. Defending World Champion Max Verstappen was looking for his sixth win in as many races to strengthen his grip on the top spot and enhance his chances of winning a second successive title.
By the end, Verstappen found himself amongst some of the best drivers of years gone by, with his sixth win in a row secured. The Red Bull driver joins Alberto Ascari, Nico Rosberg, and Michael Schumacher to have won six races in a row. However, Schumacher has done this twice, while Sebastian Vettel is the current record holder with 9.
Vettel achieved this remarkable record in 2013, when he went on to win all of the final nine races to win a remarkable fourth World Drivers Championship title in a row, also with Red Bull.
In 2023, qualifying ahead of the main event was enthralling, producing a surprising top three. Whilst it was a shock to no one that Verstappen took his spot at the front of the grid, it was a surprise to see Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri landed second and third place, respectively, in the race for McLaren.
George Russell and Lewis Hamilton would start their home race in 6th and 7th, while Fernando Alonso and Pierre Gasly rounded off the top ten.
Once the race had started, Verstappen could not hold on to the lead for long, with Lando Norris taking an early lead due to his pace and some wheelspin experienced by his Dutch counterpart.
Norris’ teammate Oscar Piastri did look like he could overtake Verstappen as well, but the Australian driver had to remain in third.
Lap 4 saw Verstappen begin to pressure Norris in his home race, but Piastri was also hot on his heels. The race for first place was intense, and it was not clear which of these three drivers would come out on top by the end of the race.
A lap later, Norris could no longer hold on to his lead, allowing Verstappen to overtake him. The McLaren driver was challenged to take his lead back almost immediately, but the current World Champion could hold him off.
There were battles across the field throughout the race, and in the latter stages, Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris were involved in a tense and competitive battle for second place. The 7-time World Champion had several opportunities to overtake his fellow Brit, but every time that Norris looked like he would concede the lead, he was impressive, as he managed to hold on to second place.
By the end of the race, Verstappen had a lead of more than 3 seconds ahead of Norris, and he confirmed his sixth successive win. The Dutchman now holds a 99-point lead over teammate Sergio Perez in second place.
His team, Red Bull, also made history, equalling McLaren’s record of 11 wins in a row in 1988.
Lando Norris’ second-place finish clinched a first podium for his team this season. Norris and McLaren will be hoping to build on this result after a slow start to the season.
Lewis Hamilton’s third-place finish sees him sit 4th in the Driver’s Championship with 121 points, with a gap of just 16 separating himself and Alonso in third.
The remainder of the 2023 season is set to be enthralling, with the Hungarian Grand Prix next up next week.
