The King George Day would rightly be described as Europe’s indisputable midsummer middle-distance showpiece, attracting the very best horses from across the continent.
This is one of the most prestigious days in the horse racing calendar, and the headline race each year is undoubtedly the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, which first took place back in 1951. The inaugural winner was Supreme Court, ridden by Charlie Elliott.
In the year’s since, legendary jockeys Lester Pigott and Frankie Dettori currently hold the joint record for wins in this race with 7 each. Pigott’s came with Meadow Court (1965), Aunt Edith (1966), Park Top (1969), Nijinsky (1970), Dahlia (1974), The Minstrel (1977), Teenoso (1984). Dettori’s seven career wins in this race came with Lammtarra (1995), Swain (1998), Daylami (1999), Doyen (2004) and Enable (2017, 2019, 2020). Enable is also the horse with the most wins to date.
Fast forward to the most recent running of this race in 2025, which saw a second consecutive win for trainer Francis-Henri Graffard, with Calandagan coming from behind to win the race with jockey Mickael Barzalona on board, taking home the victory after coming from behind. Barzalona won by one length in the end, just ahead of runner-up Kalpana, ridden by Oisin Murphy. This triumph follows Graffard’s win in 2024 with Goliath.
The 2026 running of the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes will be Britain’s richest ever race, with the prize money for the winner standing at an incredible £2 million, increasing from £1.5 million in 2025.
Anticipation and excitement is growing rapidly for another day full of enthralling action in July 2026, with the next winner of the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes set to be crowned at the iconic Ascot Racecourse.
