The Cheltenham Christmas Meeting is one of the most eye-catching race meetings on the calendar, and the prestigious event takes place annually in December. This meeting will return for another two days of enthralling action from Friday 12th to Saturday 13th December 2025.
The racing takes place over the course of two days, with 14 races being run throughout this event. The Caspian Caviar Gold Cup, also known as the December Gold Cup, is arguably the most prestigious and iconic race of the entire meeting. The Gold Cup takes place on the second day of the event.
History is synonymous with the December Gold Cup. It began all the way back in 1963, with the first-ever winner being Limeking, ridden by Toss Taaffe and trained by Danny Morgan. This would be the first and only time that either Taaffe or Morgan would win this race in their respective careers.
Poquelin and Frodon jointly hold the title for the most successful horses in this race. The former won it in consecutive years in 2009 and then in 2010, whilst the latter won in 2016 and then again a couple of years later in 2018.
However, the leading jockey title for this race is held only by Richard Johnson, who has won the December Gold Cup on no less than 3 occasions. His wins have come in 1999 (riding Legal Right), 2004 (riding Monkerhostin), and 2015 (riding Village Vic).
Paul Nicholls is the most successful trainer to enter this race, winning it 5 times. He won this race for the first time with Poquelin in 2009 before repeating the feat a year later in 2010. Nicholls then went on to win with Unioniste in 2012 and then with Frodon in 2016 and 2018.
Fast forward to 2023, where the winner was Fugitif, who was ridden to victory by jockey Gavin Sheehan.
The most recent winner of the December Gold Cup was a Venetia Williams trained Gemirande, ridden by Jockey Charlie Deutsch, back in 2024. Harry Skelton’s Madara finished as the runner-up in the end in what was an enthralling race, whilst 2023 Winner Fugitif, who was ridden by Sean Bowen, who had to settle for the final spot in the top three, finishing in third place overall in the end.
