The Cambridgeshire Handicap was first staged in 1839, when Lanercost became its inaugural winner. It has since developed into one of the best-known heritage handicaps in British Flat racing.

Run over nine furlongs on the Rowley Mile, the Cambridgeshire is traditionally staged on the final afternoon of the three-day meeting and forms the first leg of Newmarket’s historic Autumn Double alongside the Cesarewitch Handicap.

Several horses have won the Cambridgeshire twice, including Hackler’s Pride, Christmas Daisy, Sterope, Prince de Galles, Baronet, Rambo’s Hall and Bronze Angel.

Nat Flatman and George Fordham share the record among jockeys with four victories each. Flatman won aboard Vulcan in 1841, Evenus in 1844, Alarm in 1845 and Scherz in 1854, while Fordham partnered Little David in 1853, Odd Trick in 1857, See Saw in 1868 and Sabinus in 1871.

Pierre Royal Wins The 2026 Cambridgeshire Handicap

Pierre Royal became the latest winner of the Cambridgeshire Handicap when producing a dramatic late challenge at Newmarket on Saturday 26th September 2026.

Ridden by Mikey Sheehy for trainer Ado McGuinness, the 33/1 chance made progress from towards the rear before challenging Crest Of Fire in the closing stages.

Pierre Royal reached the front on the line to win by a short head from Crest Of Fire, with 100/1 chance Altareq only a further head behind in third.

The result saw Pierre Royal succeed 2025 winner Boiling Point and become the first Irish-trained winner of the race this century.

The Cambridgeshire Meeting will return in 2027, with the exact dates currently TBC.
