The Cambridgeshire Meeting at Newmarket

The Cambridgeshire Meeting is one of the major fixtures of Newmarket’s autumn Flat racing programme and is held on the Rowley Mile.

Its feature race, the Cambridgeshire Handicap, was first staged in 1839 when Lanercost became the inaugural winner.

The nine-furlong handicap has since developed into one of the best-known heritage handicaps in British Flat racing and traditionally takes place on the final day of the three-day meeting.

Seven horses share the record for most victories with two wins apiece: Hackler’s Pride, Christmas Daisy, Sterope, Prince de Galles, Baronet, Rambo’s Hall and Bronze Angel.

Nat Flatman and George Fordham are the leading jockeys in the history of the race with four victories each. Flatman won aboard Vulcan, Evenus, Alarm and Scherz, while Fordham partnered Little David, Odd Trick, See Saw and Sabinus to victory.

Pierre Royal Wins The 2026 Cambridgeshire Handicap

Pierre Royal became the latest winner of the Cambridgeshire Handicap following a dramatic finish at Newmarket on Saturday 26th September 2026.

The Ado McGuinness-trained four-year-old was sent off at 33/1 under jockey Mikey Sheehy and made his challenge from the rear of the field.

Pierre Royal progressed strongly inside the final furlong before getting up on the line to defeat Crest Of Fire by a short head.

Altareq finished another head behind in third as the first three were separated by the narrowest of margins.

The result saw Pierre Royal succeed 2025 winner Boiling Point, with attention now turning towards the 2027 Cambridgeshire Meeting.
