More About The Cambridgeshire Meeting:
The Newmarket Racecourse, the venue at which The Cambridge Meeting is to take place once more is one of the most historic and world renowned racecourses in the world. The racecourse was founded all the way back in 1636, with Charles II becoming the first and currently only reigning monarch to ride a winner when he won the inaugural Newmarket Town Plate in 1665.
As for the Cambridgeshire Meeting itself, it’s inception came almost 200 years ago in 1839. The inaugural champion of the event was Lanercost. Other than the outbreaks of World War One (1914 – 1918) and World War Two (1939 – 1945), the Cambridgeshire Meeting has ran annually. The most successful horses, who have all won the race twice are: Hackler’s Pride (1903 & 1904), Christmas Daisy (1909 & 1910), Sterope (1948 & 1949), Prince de Galles (1969 & 1970), Baronet (1978 & 1980), Rambo’s Hall (1989 & 1992) and Bronze Angel (2012 & 2014).
As for the most successful jockeys in this event, having won it 4 times, they are: Nat Flatman (Vulcan – 1841, Evenus – 1844, Alarm – 1845 & Scherz – 1854) as well as George Fordham (Little David – 1853, Odd Trick – 1857, See Saw – 1868 & Sabinus – 1871).
The most recent champion (2024) was Liberty Lane, ridden by Clifford Lee and trained by Karl Burke. The winning time was 1:50.67.
