The Coral Eclipse Day is one of the oldest and most prestigious events in the horse racing calendar, taking place at Sandown Racecourse. The event is named after Eclipse, a very popular horse who participated in numerous race events back in the 18th Century.
The Coral Eclipse Day itself is full of summer flat racing with seven engrossing races set to take place with participating horses aged 3 years old and up. You will see these horses come face to face on what is set to be an enthralling event of racing in July 2024 at Sandown.
Eclipse the horse had a trophy-laden career, and from 1769 to 1770, it won 13 major victories, which included the Salisbury King’s Plate (1769), the Lichfield King’s Plate (1769) and the Newmarket October King’s plate in 1770.
There have several horses who have found a lot of success at the Coral Eclipse Day over the years, with Orme (1892 & 1893), Buchan (1919 & 1920), Polyphontes (1924 & 1925), Mtoto (1987 & 1988) & Halling (1995 & 1996) all winning it the joint most times, with two wins each.
The most successful jockey at the Coral Eclipse over the years is the legendary Lester Piggott, who has 7 wins to his name with 7 different horses: Mystery IX (1951), Darius (1955), Arctic Explorer (1957), St Paddy (1961), Pieces of Eight (1966), Wolver Hollow (1969) & Artaius (1977).
The most recent winner of the Coral Eclipse Day at Sandown was French horse Vadeni in 2022, finishing narrowly ahead of Mishriff, who was his closest rival.
2024 is set to see a plethora of exciting action, with the Coral Eclipse Day set to take place once more at the famous Sandown Racecourse on Saturday 6th July 2024.
