Sandown Hospitality – Coral Eclipse Day – Equus Restaurant
The Coral Eclipse Day is one of the most famous events in a horse racing fan’s calendar. It has a long and decorated history, with the inaugural Eclipse Stakes taking place all the way back in 1886. The winner of the very first event was Bendingo, who was trained by Charles Jousiffe.
Eclipse was a very successful and famous horse who won no less than 13 major honours from 1869 to 1870. And as such, this is where the name of Coral Eclipse originally comes from, and it has had this name since its very beginning.
The legendary jockey Lester Pigott is the most successful jockey in the history of the event, with no less than 7 victories with 7 different horses, which were Mystery IX (1951), Darius (1955), Arctic Explorer (1957), St Paddy (1961), Pieces of Eight (1966), Wolver Hollow (1969) and Artaius (1977).
Meanwhile, the most successful horses in its history have all had 2 wins each. These horses are Orme (1892 & 1893), Buchan (1919 & 1920), Polyphontes (1924 & 1925), Mtoto (1987 & 1988), and finally Halling, who won in 1995 and a year later in 1996.
Extraordinarily, all of these horses have won the Coral Eclipse Stakes not only twice, but also in consecutive years, with no other horses matching or beating their record to date.
The Coral Eclipse occurs annually, with only two enforced breaks recorded in the early twentieth century. The first break was from 1914 to 1918 as a result of World War One, with the second hiatus coming in the wake of World War Two from 1939 to 1945.
The 2026 Coral Eclipse is set to take place on Saturday, 4th July 2026 at the famous Sandown Racecourse, dating back to 1875.
