Arsenal and Bayern Munich Advance After Thrilling Champions League Night

Arsenal booked their place in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals after a disciplined 0-0 draw against Sporting CP at the Emirates Stadium, progressing 1-0 on aggregate.
The Gunners were under huge pressure coming into this game after the manner of their Premier League defeat against Bournemouth, and having also suffered three losses in their previous four matches in all competitions.
Holding a narrow advantage from the first leg in Lisbon courtesy of Kai Havertz’s late winner, Mikel Arteta’s side approached the return fixture with control rather than risk. In a tense and often cagey contest, clear-cut chances were limited, with both teams struggling to find attacking rhythm despite spells of possession.
The visitors arguably came closest to breaking the deadlock in the first half when Geny Catamo struck the post, while Sporting continued to threaten intermittently as they chased the tie. Arsenal, meanwhile, showed flashes going forward, with Leandro Trossard also hitting the woodwork, but neither side could find the decisive touch in front of goal.
Despite the lack of attacking fluency, Arsenal’s defensive organisation proved crucial. The Gunners limited Sporting’s opportunities and maintained composure in the closing stages, with David Raya largely untroubled as the visitors pushed for a late breakthrough.
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta speaking to TNT Sports:
“It’s a massive moment. It’s the first time in our history, 140 years, we are in back-to-back [Champions League] semi-finals. To be part of those four teams is very special. You have to earn it. A lot of work. Big gratitude to the players.
“We had moments in the first half where we probably should have scored. There are moments with the ball where we have to improve a lot, to have more control, dominance, and finish many more actions.”
In truth, it was not a performance full of attacking quality, with Arsenal managing just one shot on target across the 90 minutes, but the result was all that mattered. Their resilience ensured safe passage into the final four and a second consecutive Champions League semi-final appearance.
At the final whistle, there was a sense of relief around the Emirates as much as celebration. Arsenal now turn their attention to a semi-final clash with Atlético Madrid, knowing that improvements in the final third will be required if they are to go all the way in the competition.
Elsewhere in the UEFA Champions League, Bayern Munich booked their place in the semi-finals after a dramatic 4-3 victory over Real Madrid at the Allianz Arena, sealing a 6-4 aggregate triumph in one of the ties of the round. In a breathless encounter, Madrid led three times in a frantic first half, but Bayern responded on each occasion to keep the contest finely balanced heading into the closing stages.
The decisive moment arrived late on when Eduardo Camavinga was controversially sent off, swinging momentum firmly in Bayern’s favour. The German side capitalised immediately, scoring twice in the final minutes through late strikes from Luis Díaz and Michael Olise to snatch victory and progression, setting up a semi-final clash with Paris Saint-Germain.
As well as a huge semi-final tie against Atletico Madrid, Arsenal also have three remaining home fixtures in the Premier League with Arteta’s men looking to win their first Premier League title since 2004. You can secure your seat with an Eventmasters VIP Hospitality Package here.
