Arsenal set to complete the signing of Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa after clubs agree £51 million deal
The England international has been Arsenal’s first-choice defensive target, with negotiations progressing after the Gunners initially failed to meet Villa’s £60 million valuation.
Arsenal had reopened talks with Villa over a potential move for Konsa before briefly appearing to turn their attention towards Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarell Quansah.
However, their focus returned to Konsa and an agreement has now been reached, with the defender set to make the move to Emirates Stadium.
The 28-year-old joined Aston Villa in July 2019 and has established himself as an important part of the club’s defence, making 286 appearances across seven seasons.
Konsa enjoyed another busy campaign last term, featuring 48 times in all competitions. He scored two goals and provided one assist as Unai Emery’s side won the Europa League and finished fourth in the Premier League, securing Champions League football for the 2026/27 season.
His final season at Villa Park will now be followed by a move to Arsenal, where he will provide another option in a defence competing on multiple fronts.
Konsa’s Villa career
Konsa arrived at Villa from Brentford in 2019 and quickly became a regular at the heart of the defence.
His 286 appearances for the club include a significant role in Villa’s rise under Emery, with the defender helping the side establish themselves among the Premier League’s leading clubs and return to the Champions League.
He played in every game of England’s World Cup campaign, with the Three Lions eventually finishing third.
The defender did not feature for Villa during pre-season, including their 2-1 defeat by Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup, after being given four weeks off following the World Cup.
Speaking after Villa’s final warm-up match against Borussia Monchengladbach, Emery explained the absence of Konsa, Emiliano Martinez and Ollie Watkins.
“They are joining us after this match,” said Emery.
Arsenal strengthen their defence
Konsa’s experience in the Premier League and Champions League makes him an established addition to Mikel Arteta’s squad, while his versatility gives Arsenal another option across the back line.
With a £51 million agreement now in place, Konsa’s move represents one of the latest major transfers involving a Premier League defender and provides Arsenal with another experienced England international ahead of the new campaign.
