The new football season begins with silverware on the line as Arsenal and Manchester City meet in Cardiff for the Community Shield on Sunday.
Premier League champions Arsenal will take on FA Cup winners Manchester City at the Millennium Stadium, with both sides looking to start the new campaign by lifting the traditional curtain-raiser.
For Arsenal, the fixture offers another opportunity to add to their impressive record in the competition. The Gunners have won the Community Shield 17 times, including shared victories, with only Manchester United having claimed more.
Arsenal have also won all three of their previous Community Shield appearances as reigning Premier League champions, beating Manchester United in 1998 and 2004 and Liverpool in 2002.
They will be looking to make it six Community Shield victories in a row when they face City, having also come out on top in each of their last three meetings with the Cityzens in the competition.

Arsenal’s recent penalty-shootout experience could also prove useful. Their two Community Shield victories this decade, against Liverpool in 2020 and Manchester City in 2023, were both secured from 12 yards.
Mikel Arteta has an impeccable Community Shield record himself. He won the competition twice as an Arsenal player, in 2014 and 2015, before guiding the Gunners to victory as a manager in 2020 and 2023.
Can Manchester City upset the odds?
Manchester City have lifted the Community Shield seven times, including three victories during Pep Guardiola’s reign.
Their most recent success came in 2024, when they defeated Manchester United on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
City have, however, finished runners-up in the competition nine times, meaning only Manchester United have lost the Community Shield more often.
There is one statistic that will give the FA Cup winners plenty of encouragement. In the last 10 occasions when the Community Shield has been contested between the reigning league champions and the FA Cup winners, the FA Cup holders have won eight times.
City therefore have history on their side in that respect, even if Arsenal’s overall record against them in this particular fixture suggests otherwise.
The Cityzens arrive in Cardiff after an unbeaten pre-season, excluding penalty-shootout defeats. They drew 1-1 with Inter Milan before recording 3-1 victories against a K-League XI and Atletico Madrid.
Omar Marmoush scored twice against Atletico Madrid, with Erling Haaland absent from the starting line-up.
Haaland did, however, have the final say when the sides last met competitively. City defeated Arsenal 2-1 at the Etihad in April, meaning they have lost only once in their last six meetings with the Gunners.
Another victory on Sunday would see City defeat Arsenal three times in succession for the first time since 2023.
A special venue for Arsenal
The Community Shield’s move to Cardiff gives Arsenal another reason to feel at home.
The Millennium Stadium, formerly known as the Principality Stadium, was used as the temporary home of the FA Cup final and Community Shield during the redevelopment of the national stadium between 2001 and 2007.
Arsenal played more matches there than any other club during that period, appearing at the stadium 10 times and winning four Community Shields.
Manchester City, meanwhile, have played at the Welsh stadium just once before.
That came in a UEFA Cup qualifying tie against TNS in August 2003, when City recorded a 2-0 victory.

Arsenal have been dealing with defensive problems throughout pre-season.
Jurrien Timber is expected to remain sidelined with a groin injury, while William Saliba is facing a longer absence because of a back problem.
There is better news elsewhere, with the remainder of the squad available after returning to training following their summer breaks.
However, Arsenal’s returning international players are unlikely to be thrown straight into the starting XI.
Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka and Martin Zubimendi have not featured during pre-season and could therefore begin Sunday’s match on the bench.
One player expected to feature is Bruno Guimaraes.
The £75m summer signing made his first appearance for Arsenal as a substitute against Como and is in contention to make his full debut in Cardiff.
David Raya is also expected to start in goal after saving two penalties during Arsenal’s final pre-season fixture. Kepa Arrizabalaga could therefore have to settle for a place among the substitutes.
Manchester City team news
City have welcomed Haaland back into training, but the striker’s lack of pre-season minutes means he is also expected to start on the bench.
Maresca could make further changes to the side that started against Atletico Madrid.
Savinho missed training earlier this week through illness, while Tijjani Reijnders is on the verge of a move to the Saudi Pro League.
Rodri will also miss the fixture as he continues his recovery from back surgery.
That could see Nico Gonzalez and Mateo Kovacic operate in midfield, with new signing Elliot Anderson still waiting to make his City debut.
Haaland’s potential introduction from the bench could nevertheless provide City with a major attacking option as the match progresses.
