Aston Villa confirm double signing of Zion Suzuki and Matteo Ruggeri with Ollie Watkins’ future hanging in the balance

Japan international Suzuki has joined from Serie A side Parma in a deal worth around £30 million, while Ruggeri has completed a £17 million move from Atletico Madrid.

Zion Suzuki joins Aston Villa from Parma

Suzuki has signed permanently from Parma after spending the past two seasons in Serie A.

The 23-year-old goalkeeper was born in the United States but grew up in Urawa, Japan, where he made his senior debut for Urawa Red Diamonds at just 16 years old.

After a spell with Belgian club Sint-Truiden, Suzuki moved to Parma and made 59 appearances for the Italian side.

He has also established himself at international level, earning 22 senior caps for Japan and representing the Samurai Blue at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Villa see Suzuki as a long-term option in goal, with the club reportedly viewing the highly rated goalkeeper as a potential number one for many years to come.

His arrival comes amid uncertainty surrounding Emi Martinez, whose proposed move to Juventus collapsed after the two clubs were unable to agree a fee.

Matteo Ruggeri arrives from Atletico Madrid

The Italian left-back came through the academy at Atalanta, making more than 100 appearances for the Serie A club and helping them win the UEFA Europa League in 2024.

Ruggeri subsequently moved to Atletico Madrid last summer before making the switch to Villa Park.

Despite representing Italy at several youth levels and receiving senior call-ups, Ruggeri is yet to make his debut for the Azzurri.

He arrives at Villa following the departure of Lucas Digne, who joined European champions Paris Saint-Germain earlier this month.

Villa will hope Ruggeri can quickly settle into the squad and provide competition on the left side of their defence.

Ollie Watkins future remains uncertain

Villa’s latest arrivals come at a time of further movement around the squad, with Ollie Watkins attracting interest from Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal.

The Saudi side have already seen a £38.5 million offer for the striker rejected, but negotiations remain ongoing.

Watkins is reportedly keen on the move, with Al Hilal considering the 30-year-old as a potential replacement for Karim Benzema.
