Aston Villa Held by Fulham as Nicolas Jackson Continues Impressive Goalscoring Form
Aston Villa extended their unbeaten run in the Premier League to five matches on Saturday evening, although Unai Emery’s side were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against Fulham at Villa Park despite another goal from in-form striker Nicolas Jackson.
The Villans had looked on course for a third consecutive league victory after Jackson’s first-half strike gave them the lead, but a second-half mistake from goalkeeper Zion Suzuki allowed the visitors to equalise.
It was a frustrating result for Emery’s side, particularly after John McGinn missed an early penalty, although Villa’s recent performances suggest they are moving in the right direction following a difficult start to the 2026/27 campaign.
With four wins from their previous five Premier League fixtures heading into the contest, Villa had been building momentum, and another goal from Jackson provided further encouragement ahead of an important November schedule.
McGinn Misses Penalty Before Jackson Puts Villa Ahead
Villa started brightly in front of their home supporters, with Leon Goretzka heavily involved in the opening exchanges on his first Premier League start for the club.
The hosts were presented with an excellent opportunity to take the lead after referee Sam Barrott awarded a penalty following a VAR review, with Fulham midfielder Sander Berge adjudged to have handled the ball inside the area.
Captain John McGinn stepped forward but was unable to capitalise, sending his powerful effort against the crossbar to leave the score level.
Despite the missed opportunity, Villa continued to threaten, although they required an excellent save from Zion Suzuki to prevent Oscar Bobb from giving Fulham the lead following a dangerous counterattack.
The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 39th minute through Nicolas Jackson, who continued his outstanding individual start to the season.
After receiving a pass from Johan Manzambi, the Senegal international worked his way through the Fulham defence before producing a composed finish beyond Bernd Leno.
It was Jackson’s eighth goal of the campaign and his fifth in his previous five Premier League appearances, further underlining his growing importance to Emery’s attack.
Villa entered the interval with a deserved advantage, although their inability to convert further opportunities ultimately proved costly.
Fulham Fight Back as Suzuki Error Proves Costly
The visitors emerged for the second half with greater attacking intent, putting Villa under sustained pressure as they searched for an equaliser.
Fulham began to enjoy more possession and create opportunities, with Gonzalo GarcÃa and Shea Charles among those threatening the home defence.
Suzuki initially produced another impressive save to deny Alex Iwobi, but the goalkeeper was unable to prevent Fulham from drawing level shortly afterwards.
In the 64th minute, Iwobi delivered a corner into the Villa penalty area, which Suzuki failed to gather before the ball crossed the goal line. The incident was recorded as an own goal, bringing Fulham back into the contest.
Emery responded by introducing Emiliano BuendÃa, Ibrahim Mbaye and João Gomes as Villa attempted to regain control.
The closing stages became increasingly open, with both teams believing they could secure a late winner. Pau Torres twice threatened with headers for the hosts, but Fulham held firm to claim a point at Villa Park.
Emery Reflects on Disappointing Result
Speaking after the match, Villa manager Unai Emery acknowledged his disappointment at failing to secure all three points but accepted that Fulham had earned their share of the spoils.
“It’s a disappointing result, a fair result,” the Spaniard admitted, highlighting the visitors’ improved performance after the interval.
Emery also defended Suzuki following the goalkeeper’s costly mistake, recognising the important saves he had produced throughout the encounter.
The draw leaves Villa unbeaten in five Premier League matches, although the manager will undoubtedly want to see greater consistency across both halves as his side look to climb further up the table.
One significant positive remains Jackson’s form in front of goal. With eight goals already this season, the forward is establishing himself as one of Villa’s most important attacking players and will be central to their ambitions over the coming months.
